WHAT: The Day of the Teacher event honors three outstanding educators who have been named San Diego Unified 2017 Teachers of the Year at the elementary, middle and high school level. The three Teacher of the Year runners-up and more than 130 Teachers of the Year from individual school sites will also be recognized.

WHEN:  May 9, 2017, 4:15 to 5 p.m. Reception; 5-7 p.m. Day of the Teacher Special Board of Education Celebration

WHERE: Patrick Henry Arts, Media and Entertainment Center, Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Dr, San Diego, CA 92120

ATTENDEES INCLUDE: Superintendent Cindy Marten, Board of Education members, district leadership, school administrators, families and friends of teachers being recognized, student performers from Patrick Henry and Mission Bay high schools, and culinary arts students from Garfield and Morse high schools.

VISUALS: The district’s three Teachers of the Year honored with video tributes, three runners-up receiving special recognition, and the recognition of site teachers of the year. Attendance is typically between 300-350 people.

  • 4:15-4:50 p.m.: Culinary students from Garfield and Morse high schools are prepping and serving food during the reception.
  • 4:15-4:50 p.m.: A string quartet from Patrick Henry High will perform at the reception.
  • 5 p.m.: The Preservationists, the award-winning Jazz group from Mission Bay High, will kick off the ceremony. Their director, Jean-Paul Balmat, is the 2017 High School Teacher of the Year honoree.

DETAILS: Nominees for Teacher of the Year are first selected by their school sites. These individuals have the option to apply for District Teacher of the Year, a process that includes written essays, interviews, and classroom observation. The Teacher of the Year winners and runners-up are selected by a six-member committee made up of previous District Teachers of the Year. All district winners have the option to apply for the county-wide award program.

This year’s winners are:

  • Claudia Sanchez-Guevara, fifth-grade, Bethune K-8. She had such an impact on her fourth-grade students, that they successfully petitioned to have her become their fifth grade teacher.  There is little question Sanchez-Guevara has a tremendous impact on her students. She relates to them. She cares for them. She sets high expectations for them.
  • Vanessa Hart, six- and seventh-grade English, De Portola Middle. She strives to create a relaxed, fun environment so that students feel comfortable and aren’t afraid to take risks with their learning. Hart uses a lot of historical fiction to fuel compassion, and will often turn lessons into games in order to motivate students to learn.
  • Jean-Paul Balmat, music teacher, Mission Bay High. He became a music teacher because of the influence his own music teacher had on him when he was a student at Mission Bay. If there was ever any doubt about the impact a teacher can have on a student, Balmat is proof. He shares his love of music with students and teaches them about more than just notes on a page. He teaches music concepts, leadership, respect and how to carry oneself like a professional musician.

This year’s runners up are:

  • Robert Daluraya, science prep, Hickman Elementary
  • Denise Tayco, seventh-grade science, Pershing Middle
  • Jaime Brown, 12th-grade IB English and IB film, San Diego High School of International Studies

Bios and photos are available for Teachers of the Year and runners up.

In addition to the Teachers of the Year, there is a reception prior to the special Board of Education meeting, starting at 4:15 p.m. Students from San Diego Unified's award-winning culinary arts programs at Garfield and Morse high schools are prepping and serving appetizers and desserts. The string quartet from Patrick Henry High School will provide entertainment.

Spanish Soccer Giant Teams Up with Local School District

FC Barcelona and San Diego Unified join forces to bring youth soccer opportunities to all

SAN DIEGO (May 4, 2017) - FC Barcelona, through its FCBEscola Program, has partnered with the San Diego Unified School District to bring the first ever "FCBEscola" Soccer Academy to San Diego. Serving as FCBEscola's headquarters on the West Coast, San Diego Unified will be the first school district in the United States to team up with the FCBEscola program, and the first to open a world class soccer academy in its hometown.

The unique collaboration between FCBEscola and San Diego Unified will provide free one-of-a-kind monthly soccer youth development clinics, as well as a tuition-based soccer academy program. The district's students will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to attend the free clinics and, for those interested, a reduced fee to attend the year-round soccer academy will also be offered. The tuition-based academy will be open to all members of the San Diego community. Both the clinics and the academy will begin this fall.

Operating out of Bell Middle School, the FBCEscola programs will teach youth soccer players – both boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 16 – the methodology, style of play and values that have made FC Barcelona one of the top soccer clubs in the world. FCBEscola will also offer scholarships and discounted rates to those who qualify. In addition, students and community members enrolled in the FBCEscola programs will have the opportunity to be selected for an "FCB Experience" which includes a trip to Barcelona to practice and play soccer at the FC Barcelona headquarters, known as Ciutat Esportiva.

"San Diego Unified is proud to bring these unique and exciting opportunities to the San Diego Unified student population, and to the San Diego community at large," said Scott Giusti, director of physical education, health and athletics for the school district.

¨For us, this is great news," added Franc Carbo, director of FCBEscola. "We will be able to provide a comprehensive soccer development program targeted toward youth, all the while continuing to leverage our social approach by instilling our values and methodologies to San Diego Unified School District students and the youth community in San Diego. ¨

A press conference will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 8, at Bell Middle School in San Diego (620 Briarwood Road, 92139).

13 San Diego Unified High Schools Named Best in The Nation

SAN DIEGO (May 4, 2017) – The San Diego Unified School District is proud to announce that 13 district high schools have earned a spot on the 2017 U.S. News and World Report's list of "Best High Schools in America."

The 2017 Best High Schools<https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/search?bronze=true&district-id=107425&gold=true&silver=true&state-urlname=california> list released this week by U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings, awarded "Gold Medal" honors to both La Jolla and Scripps Ranch high schools.

Point Loma, University City, Patrick Henry, San Diego, Serra, Mira Mesa, Morse, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, Clairemont, Kearny and Madison high schools all received "Silver Medal" honors.

The U.S. News rankings identify the top-performing public high schools at the national and state level and include published data on more than 22,000 schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. The rankings award public high schools with gold, silver and bronze medals, indicating their level of college readiness.

The Best High Schools rankings, available exclusively on usnews.com<https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools>, feature data on a number of factors, including enrollment, graduation rates, diversity, participation in free and reduced-price lunch programs, and the results of state assessments and AP®.

The annual report's purpose is meant to highlight public schools that best serve all of their students, including disadvantaged populations. Overall, the rankings focus on student outcomes with an emphasis on graduation rates and state proficiency tests. Students at the 6,041 schools that receive national recognition from U.S. News graduate at rates that are 15 percent higher, on average, than students at schools nationwide that are not ranked.
