Cyber technology is woven into the cultural fabric of today's youth—91% of
teens have their own email address, 73% a
cell phone and 72% their own profile on a social networking site. While it's
great that kids are tech‐savvy, their cyber
worlds are largely unsupervised.
How do parents prepare for this year's cyber summer? Law enforcement and
educators will discuss tips for parents, as
well as the results of their collaboration in the SafetyNet: Smart Cyber
Choices™ program.

Speakers/interview opportunities:

 San Diego Police Foundation (SDPF) – Wenda Alvarez, President/CEO

 San Diego Police Department (SDPD) – Cesar Solis, Assistant Chief. SDPD is
the lead agency of the San Diego
Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (SD‐ICAC). SD‐ICAC is one of the
Units under Asst. Chief Solis'
command.

 School administrator: Chris Hargrave, Principal, Muirlands Middle School
Background:

 Muirlands is one of 28 middle schools in San Diego County participating in
the SafetyNet: Smart Cyber Choices™

 The SafetyNet™ program is a public education effort of the regional law
enforcement San Diego Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force (SD‐ICAC) and the San Diego Police Foundation in
cooperation with middle schools

parents. It's free, and it works!

of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention makes the program possible through December 2010. Additional
funding is being sought to extend the
SafetyNet program and empower more children and parents with smart cyber
