Cyber technology is woven into the cultural fabric of today's youth—91% of
teens have their own email address, 73% a
cell phone and 72% their own profile on a social networking site. While it's
great that kids are tech‐savvy, their cyber
worlds are largely unsupervised.
How do parents prepare for this year's cyber summer? Law enforcement and
educators will discuss tips for parents, as
well as the results of their collaboration in the SafetyNet: Smart Cyber
Choices™ program.

Background:
Muirlands is one of 28 middle schools in San Diego County participating in
the SafetyNet: Smart Cyber Choices™
program.
The SafetyNet™ program is a public education effort of the regional law
enforcement San Diego Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force (SD‐ICAC) and the San Diego Police Foundation in
cooperation with middle schools
countywide. It's a program getting high marks from students, educators and
parents. It's free, and it works!
A Project Safe Childhood grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office
of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention makes the program possible through December 2010. Additional
funding is being sought to extend the
SafetyNet program and empower more children and parents with smart cyber
choices.
SafetyNet: Smart Cyber Choices™ is an example of the San Diego Police
Foundation's work to build safer
communities. The nonprofit organization's mission is to improve human
services delivered by men and women
(and dogs) who "Protect and Serve," with community‐funded grants for
training, equipment and collaborative
programs not covered by public‐funded budgets. . To date, the Foundation has
provided grants totaling nearly $4
million.
