Madison High School Dedicates New
Automotive Engineering-Technology Facility
WHAT: San Diego Unified School District’s Madison High School is dedicating its new state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot automotive engineering and technology facility on Wednesday. The dedication ceremony will culminate in a ribbon-cutting and tour of the facility. Visuals also include the presentation of colors by the Madison High School JROTC, student-lead Pledge of Allegiance, student-sung national anthem; and a 1928 Model A Ford Roadster owned and driven by John Witt, current San Diego County Office of Education board member, former SDUSD board member, and former Madison HS parent.
WHEN: Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, 10:30–11:00 a.m. (speeches, ribbon-cutting ceremony, tour of facility); 11-11:30 a.m. (post-event interviews)
WHO: Principal Richard Nash will emcee the event. Guest speakers include John Lee Evans, SDUSD Board of Education member; Marian Phelps, SDUSD Area Four superintendent; Shawn Loescher, director of SDUSD’s College, Career and Technical Education; and Stuart Markey, executive director of the SDUSD’s Capital Improvement Bond Program (Proposition S). All will be available for interviews. (Evans will be available for interviews before the event, but not afterward.)
WHERE: 4833 Doliva Drive, San Diego, CA 92117 (north side of campus). Directions to dedication site: From Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, turn south on Doliva Drive, east on Kesling Street, south on Mount Abernathy, then right into the parking lot. Proceed through the construction gate, and park in the area near the new facility and construction trailers (parking is available adjacent to the new facility).
BACKGROUND: On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize more than 200 schools. The state-of-the art automotive facility is one of 22 College, Career & Technical Education projects being constructed under the Proposition S (local) and Proposition 1D (state) bond programs. It represents an investment of more than $3 million into Madison High School and the Clairemont community.
The newly-constructed automotive facility includes a 10,000-square-foot building with eight auto bays that serve as laboratories and classrooms to accommodate more than 70 students. The facility was designed according to industry standards—with input from a task force comprised of members from various commercial automotive fields--to create a professional and practical environment for students
The project partners included Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects and Soltek Pacific Construction.
