SAN DIEGO Back by popular demand, the Third Annual San Diego Unified
School Choice Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30,
at the Balboa Park Recital Hall.
The free event will highlight schools and student performances from
throughout the San Diego Unified School District. Families across the county
can learn first-hand about the many educational options available to
students, including those parents do not live within the district¹s
attendance boundaries.
Information about district-run schools, including neighborhood, magnet and
International Baccalaureate, as well as other innovative programs, will be
under one roof. Representatives from the enrollment office will be available
to answer school choice application questions.
A variety of activities are scheduled. For example, performing arts students
will be on stage dancing and bands will play, while other student show off
their science projects and other materials they created while learning.
School principals and other staff will be available to answer questions
about their curriculum, students and family services.
The San Diego Unified School District is proud to offer a variety of
enrollment choices to students and parents. Families may choose the
convenience of attending their neighborhood school or explore the exciting
programs available to students who reside within district boundaries and
wish to attend a another campus.
· Magnet Programs: Magnet schools provide in-depth, innovative, learning
opportunities for students while meeting rigorous California state
curriculum standards. Some of the opportunities include science, technology,
engineering, math, creative and performing arts, International Baccalaureate
Studies, MicroSociety, Paideia, and language immersion.
· Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP): Students may attend
schools other than their resident schools. VEEP is open to all students
residing within a specific boundary of a school that has an approved VEEP
pattern. Transportation is offered within the VEEP patterns. Transportation
is limited and may be reduced when budgetary decisions are finished.
· Program Improvement School Choice: The federal "No Child Left Behind
Act" (NCLB) provides up to two school options for students attending a
Program Improvement (P.I.) school.
· School Choice/Open Enrollment Act: This offers parents the opportunity
to apply to any school in the district on an availability basis only. School
Choice students do not receive district provided transportation. Students
attending or scheduled to attend a school on the Open Enrollment Act List
will have priority for schools with a higher API.
