May 13, 2022
SAN DIEGO – Lisa Cooper, a Library Technician II, and Norma Smith, a School Clerk I, have been named San Diego Unified School District's Classified Employees of the Year for 2022.
Coinciding with Classified School Employee Week, San Diego Unified will honor the 2022 Classified Employee of the Year, Classified Employee of the Year Runner-Up, and the site Classified Employees of the Year at a special virtual celebration on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. Classified Employees of the Year from individual schools and departments will also be honored.
In observance of Classified Employee Appreciation Week, May 15-22, 2022, classified school employees will be honored at the virtual celebration hosted by CBS 8 journalist Shawn Styles. To coincide with the celebration, the district challenges San Diegans to thank a school employee who has impacted their life, either in-person or on social media platforms using the hashtag #ThankASchoolEmployeeSD and #ClassifiedEmployeeAppreciationWeek.
"This week I challenge everyone to stop and take notice of the huge role that classified employees play in the education of our students. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to public education," said Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson. "I am extremely proud of our classified employees and grateful for the hard work they do everyday. Classified employees provide essential resources to our students, keep our district running, and most of all fill our school communities with love and support. Their invaluable contributions deserve our highest recognition year-round."
The Board of Education honors classified employees each year with an event that celebrates their work in the district. This year's virtual event is co-hosted by North Island Credit Union.
"As a proud supporter of our education community, we are excited to partner with the San Diego Unified School District in celebrating the hard work and commitment of these school employees," said North Island Credit Union President/CEO Steve O'Connell. "Throughout a year of extraordinary challenges for our learning communities, these individuals never failed to step up and serve the many needs of their schools and students. We congratulate the award recipients and nominees for this important recognition of the crucial role they play in the success of their schools, students, and communities."
Additional sponsors of the event are California Coast Credit Union, California Schools VEBA, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit, Mission Federal Credit Union, M2 Video Productions, and the San Diego Education Fund.
