NEWS RELEASE -- Mt. Everest Academy Students Dismissed Due to Electrical Fire

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, September 24, 2009

MT. EVEREST ACADEMY STUDENTS DISMISSED DUE TO ELECTRICAL FIRE

SAN DIEGO -- An electrical fire that may have involved the school's rooftop
solar system has closed Mt. Everest Academy in Clairemont this afternoon,
with approximately 130 students being released to a parent or guardian. The
school is located at 4350 Mount Everest Blvd. (92117) in the Clairemont
neighborhood.

No injuries were reported from the fire, which started before 11 a.m. today.
The students and staff followed fire drill procedures and were in no danger.
However, because the solar system was still producing electrical arcs, the
principal, Dr.Nicole Wahab, is dismissing school for the day.

Approximately 130 students were in attendance today at Mt. Everest Academy,
which is a school for students on independent study and home-school programs
in grades kindergarten through 12. Students visit the campus at irregular
intervals.

Parents and guardians are being notified via the district's telephone
notification system, ConnectEd.

Under San Diego Unified's reunification procedure, parents or guardians will
need to show identification before the school will release the student.
Parents with questions can call the district's High School office at (619)
725-7237.

Principal Wahab will be sending a follow-up ConnectEd message to parents and
guardians regarding the reopening of school. If their child is attending Mt.
Everest Academy on Thursday or Friday, parents and guardians can also call
the school in the morning, at (858) 496-8778, to determine whether classes
are in session. They can also check the district's website at www.sandi.net
for updates.

No word yet on when the school will be reopened, or an estimate on the cost
of the damage.
