MEDIA CALENDAR -- Upcoming Events in the San Diego Unified School
District, Feb. 22, 2012

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

FEBRUARY

23 -- Barnard Mandarin Chinese Magnet School Chinese New Year Celebration,
11 a.m., Barnard Chinese Magnet School, 2930 Barnard St. (92110). The
school's fifth-annual celebration has kids dancing, music and other
festivities. It will be the last at the Barnard Street location as the
school is moving to Pacific Beach next year. Contact: Eddie Park,

* 24 -- Miss Representation: Is the Media Harming Your Child's Potential?
4:30 p.m., Muirlands Middle School, 1056 Nautilus St. (92037). The La
Jolla High School PTA will screen this controversial film, followed by a
panel discussion with psychologists and educators. Tickets: $5. Contact:

* 26 -- Serra High Electives and Fine Arts Faire, 6 p.m., Serra High
School, 5156 Santo Rd. (92124). Arts, business, English, science, social
science, math, Navy JROTC, athletics and world language teachers and
students will be available to talk about their programs for incoming
eighth graders and current students. The community is also invited to see
what kinds of programs are available at their neighborhood high school.

* 26 -- Community College Family Night, 6 p.m., Hoover High School, 4474
El Cajon Blvd. (92115). Families can learn about how to apply to community
colleges, placement tests, costs and other information. Representatives
from City, Mesa, Miramar, Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are scheduled to

MARCH

2 -- San Diego Unified K-12 Honor Choir Concert, 7-9 p.m., Brown Chapel,
Point Loma Nazarene University, 3900 Lomaland Dr. (92106). Elementary,
middle and high school students who have been selected by audition will
perform in four honor concerts under the direction of special guest
conductors. Community members as well as family and friends are invited.
There is a $2.00 charge and tickets will be available at the door.

4 -- An Evening with UCSD at Lincoln High School, 6-8 p.m., Lincoln High
School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). Parents and high school students
interested in the options available after high school and how to prepare
for higher education are invited to attend an evening with UC San Diego at
Lincoln High School. San Diego Unified School District and University of
California, San Diego are teaming up to provide the informational event
that will focus on navigating the college preparatory process, admissions,
financial aid and career services. Hear from current UCSD students and
alumni, as well as from Pradeep Khosla, Chancellor, UCSD. Contact: Rebecca

7 -- Dana Middle School Family Tour, 3:30 p.m., Dana Middle School, 1775
Chattsworth Blvd. (92107). Fourth grade students and parents are invited
to participate in a school tour. Meet with Principal Ryan and other staff
members during a Q-A session. Tour the library, art studio, science labs,
music rooms, physical education center, and classrooms. Contact: Diane

* 7 -- Options for High School and Beyond for Students with Individual
Education Programs, 6-9 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress St.
(92110). Parents and students who have an Individual Education Program
(IEP) or a 504 are invited to a panel discussion of programs and services
offered to students after they leave high school or turn 18. Contact: Jane

8, 9 -- Association of African American Educators' 22nd Annual Conference,
Mission Valley Marriott Hotel, 8757 Rio San Diego Dr. (92108). The
Association of African American Educators hosts an annual conference to
encourage, equip, and empower attendees to make a meaningful difference in
the lives of African and African-American children. Educators and
concerned community members return each year to learn from each other and
from engaging workshop facilitators, session presenters, and keynote
speakers. This year's theme is Still We Rise. Speakers will be 79th
District Assemblywoman Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D and Edwin Lou Javius, Ed.D,
founder, president and CEO of EdEquity Inc. Contact: The office of the

9 -- San Diego Unified Instrument Honor Concert, 7-9 p.m., Copley Symphony
Hall, 750 B. St. (92101). (9). 2013 High School Instrumental Honor Concert
will feature high school students from throughout the district. This
concert is free and is open to the public. There will be a band and an

11 -- Area 1 cluster meeting, Porter North Elementary, 6-8 p.m., 445 S.
47th St. (92113). Parents, students and community members are invited to
attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at Area 1 schools.
Baker, Balboa, Chavez, Chollas/Mead, Encanto, Horton, Johnson, Nye,
Porter, Valencia Park, Webster elementary schools; Knox and Millennial

* 13 -- Mira Mesa High Eighth Grade Open House, 4:45-7 p.m., Mira Mesa
High School, 10510 Reagan Rd. (92126). Students in grade 8 who are
considering Mira Mesa High can meet teachers and fellow students during

* 16-23 -- San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering. Annual event
held at locations all over San Diego County salutes science, engineering

20 -- Dr. Thomas Greenspan, "Perfectionism: Something Positive or
Something Negative?" the GATE Distinguished Lecture Series, 7 p.m.,
Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103). Dr.
Greenspan is a psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private
practice in Minneapolis. The GATE Distinguished Lecture Series brings
nationally recognized speakers to San Diego to talk about gifted and

21 -- San Diego Unified Elementary Instrumental Honor Concert, 7-9 p.m.,
