ANNOUNCEMENT OF $750,000, THREE-YEAR GRANT TO BOOST MILITARY-DEPENDENT TESTING AT SERRA HIGH

WHAT: Announcement of $750,000, three-year grant creating a partnership between the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and the National Math and Science Initiative to help Serra High School military-dependent students to increase achievement and participation in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and tests.

WHEN: 10:40-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2014

WHERE: Serra High School, 5156 Santo Rd. (92124). Classroom of Elizabeth Ward, former San Diego Unified Teacher of the Year.

DETAILS: Announcement to kick off the partnership between NMSI and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) implementing and supporting the expansion of NMSI's comprehensive AP Program serving military families for the 2013-14 school year at Junipero Serra High School; build presence and knowledge through the district and state and recruitment/encouragement of further students to participate in AP courses.

SPEAKERS: Speakers include Rep. Scott Peters (D-San Diego); Kevin Beiser, President, San Diego Unified Board of Education; Dale Fleury, National Math and Science Initiative; Cindy Marten, Superintendent, San Diego Unified School District; Navy and Marine representatives.

VISUALS: Ms. Ward's class starts at 10:41. Her AP English class is researching issues and discovering how different opinions can be on one topic. Each of the VIPs invited to the event will be working with a group of students. Media is welcome to photograph and interview students and VIPs during this time, from class start at 10:41 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m.
