2nd Annual San Diego Unified School Police "True Blue Buddies" Yearlong Mentorship Program Kicks-Off with Back-to-School Shopping Spree
WHAT: The second annual San Diego Unified School District Police Department True Blue Buddies event will pair 30 deserving students from Porter Elementary School with San Diego Unified School Police Officers for a $100 back-to-school shopping spree at Target.

WHEN: Monday, August 22, 2016, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Porter Elementary School, 4800 "T" St., San Diego (92113)
Target College Grove, 3424 College Ave., San Diego (92115)

DETAILS: Third through Fifth grade students from the Southeastern neighborhood school will receive a $100 Target gift card to spend on new clothes and shoes to start off the new school in style as well as a brand new backpack. The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 29, 2016. Each student will be partnered with a member of the San Diego Unified School Police Services and San Diego Police. Students were invited to participate based on need, including low income and homelessness. The event is being supported by the district's Children and Youth in Transition program, San Diego Unified School Police and the College Grove Target store team. The True Blue Buddies program will expand to other school sites and different events in the future.

The 2nd annual Back-to-School shopping spree serves as the kick-off event to a yearlong mentorship program that includes various events over the school year, including educational workshops and Holiday gatherings. The primary goal of the mentorship program is to provide support through small group mentoring, as well as to help facilitate and build positive relationships with Police Officers at an early age.

SPEAKERS: Superintendent Cindy Marten, San Diego School Police Chief Rueben Littlejohn, Porter Elementary School Principal Lillie McMillan, Target Community Outreach Representative Jessica-Marie Thrift, San Diego School Police Officers and Porter Elementary Students will also be available for interview.

VISUALS/SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
9:05 a.m. Press Conference
9:10 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Students arrive at Porter Elementary School and are paired with their Buddy
9:35 a.m. Students and their buddies board the yellow school bus
9:45 a.m. Bus leaves Porter Elementary with Police escort
10 -11 a.m. Shopping at the College Grove Target Store
11 a.m. Return to Porter Elementary
11:15 a.m. - 1 p.m. Free BBQ lunch and activities, including a magic show.
