MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified + San Diego Press Club present: February ED Talks

San Diego journalists are invited to participate in a special installment of ED Talks, a casual forum hosted by the San Diego Unified School District in collaboration with the San Diego Press Club. The goal is to foster open and robust conversations about public education.

The February forum will include high school journalists from San Diego Unified, and will be devoted to high school free-speech rights. Among the cases to be discussed will be the 1969 U.S. Supreme Court case affirming First Amendment rights of free of speech in schools; and the 2012 La Jolla High School “free speech benches” case, which resulted in improved understanding of free-speech rights for students. The event will take place at Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, University of San Diego in advance of a USD forum on free-speech rights in schools:

Background: In Des Moines, Iowa, students at a public school protested against the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands.  The students were told that they would be suspended if they wore the armbands. The students wore the armbands and were suspended. The parents sued the school for violating their children's right to free speech. A U.S. district court ruled in favor of the school.  The parents appealed the ruling and lost. Ultimately the parents took their case, Tinker v Des Moines to the United States Supreme Court. In 1969 the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the students (7-2), affirming First Amendment rights of freedom apply to schools.

This event is for professional journalists. Please confirm attendance in advance by replying to this email or by calling 619-725-5578.
