MEDIA ADVISORY: Walker Elementary School Celebrates Read Across America Day with Celebrity Guest Readers
WHAT: Walker Elementary School is celebrating the annual Read Across America Day and will be joined by local celebrity guest readers. The guest readers will enjoy a continental breakfast, participate in the Read Across America Assembly, judge the Door Decorating Contest, and most importantly, visit the classrooms to share their love of reading with Walker Eagle students.
Celebrity guest readers this year include San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan; NBC 7/39 Newscaster Whitney Southwick; the ABC 10News Morning Team Megan Parry, Virginia Cha, Jared Aarons and Kalyna Astrinos; San Diego Unified Police Chief Michael Marquez; and San Diego Police Department Assistant Chief Terence Charlot.

Background: Read Across America was created in 1997 by the National Education Association as a way to motivate students to read, expand student vocabulary and strengthen analytical thinking skills. Research has shown that students who read do better in school. Read Across America Day is a nationwide celebration that takes place on March 2, in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
