San Diego Unified’s Honor Choirs Perform Songs from “Coco” to Billy Joel at Free Concert

The San Diego Unified School District is proud to once again host a District Choral Honor Concert. The concert will feature three choirs comprised of nearly 120 students in grades 4-12, from 35 schools in the district.

At the direction of some of the region’s top choral directors, each choir will perform four songs, demonstrating variety in style, culture, language, and history—from African folk songs to American spirituals to Billy Joel to a song from the recent movie “Coco.” The grand finale will feature all 120 students and their choral teachers together on stage.  The concert, with some of the best vocal talent from across the city, will perform at the Lincoln High School theater at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7. Admission is free and parking is available in the school’s parking structure. Lincoln High School is located at 4777 Imperial Avenue.

As part of San Diego Unified’s commitment to arts education, the middle and high school choral programs allow ALL students in grades 4-12 to once again participate in honor choir. Honor choir students have the opportunity to work with some of the region’s most esteemed musical directors. This collaboration provides musical growth and professional development for both students and teachers.

The Debut Honor Choir, for students in grades 4-6, is directed by Sally Husch Dean and accompanied by Anna Juliar. Dean is the founding artistic director of a youth choir program, the San Diego North Coast Singers. She formerly directed the Palomar College Chamber Singers and the Palomar College Chorale.

The Tenor-Bass Honor Choir, for students in grades 7-12, is directed by Juan Carlos Acosta and accompanied by Lisa Pagan. Acosta recently made his conducting debut with the Sand Diego Opera, and serves as the Artistic Director of the SACRA/PROFANA chamber choir.

Kathleen Hansen—accompanied by Kyle Adam Blair—directs students  in grades 7-12 in the Treble Honor Choir. Hansen is the musical and artistic director of San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines, the Sun Harbor Chorus and the San Diego Women’s Chorus.
