MEDIA ADVISORY: City Attorney, San Diego Unified Announce Joint Effort to Inform Families of New Safe Storage Law for Firearms

WHAT: As part of Gun Violence Prevention Week, the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education will take up the topic of safe gun storage at its scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11. That morning, Board Vice President Richard Barrera and Superintendent Cindy Marten will join San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott to announce a joint effort to reduce gun violence.

At the press conference, the City Attorney will discuss a new San Diego law requiring all firearms to be safely stored in the home. District officials will outline steps they plan to take to inform parents of the new legislation. Nationally, 4.6 million children live in a home with unsecured firearms, and 73 percent of children ages 9 and under reported knowing the location of their parent’s firearms; 36 percent of those children admitted that they had handled the firearms.

 WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, 9:00 a.m.

WHERE: Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St., San Diego, CA 92103

BACKGROUND: Firearm-related deaths in the United States are the second leading cause of injury-related deaths in children between the ages of 1 and 17. Last year, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott introduced and the San Diego City Council enacted a Safe Storage of Firearms Ordinance. The law took effect soon after the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year. The City of San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms law requires all residents to safely lock or store firearms inside their homes, unless the weapon is being carried on the body or in the immediate control of its owner or other authorized user.
