BACKGROUND:
A four-time CIF and one-time state champion, Mira Mesa High School’s baseball team has been around since 1977 and has seen three alumni go on to play in Major League Baseball, including 2012 graduate Jake Newberry, who pitched for the Kansas City Royals, 1991 graduate Mike Bovee, who pitched for the Anaheim Angels, and 1984 graduate Dean Wilkins, who pitched for the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.
As part of a site improvements project, the school’s baseball field underwent major renovations, including new foul ball fencing, a CIF regulation backstop, a public address system and a drinking fountain. The project also included replacement of the announcers booth and storage containers, repairs to the dugouts and batting cages, and grading and irrigation upgrades.
The completion of this field adds to a series of projects that rejuvenated the Mira Mesa High School campus over the past seven years, including construction of one of the district’s largest music buildings, renovations to existing classrooms, upgrades to collaborative work spaces, a new ASB store, makeovers of College, Career and Technical Education facilities, and solar photovoltaic system in the north and southeast parking lots.
This fall, construction will also begin on a new two-story classroom and student services facility that will include a student commons and modern classrooms.
