Native American Heritage Month Recognized at San Diego Unified with First-Ever Kumeyaay Band Flag Raising
November 1, 2023
WHAT: In honor of Native American Heritage Month, students will raise the Kumeyaay Band flag at district headquarters for the first time.
WHEN: 10-11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, 2023
WHERE: Eugene Brucker Education Center flagpole: 4100 Normal Street, San Diego, CA 92103
VISUALS: Land acknowledgement, Kumeyaay bird singers, powwow dancers, student speakers, flag-raising
INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: Available starting at 9:30 a.m. Interviews are available following flag raising at 11 a.m.
BACKGROUND: The Kumeyaay were the original caretakers of the land where San Diego Unified schools and offices now reside. In addition to a Native American Heritage Month Board Resolution, the flag-raising is just one of many steps the district is taking this year to show solidarity with our Native American students and the larger Kumeyaay community.
The flag itself is inspired by an elder from the Jamul tribe and approved by a committee of leaders of the region’s 12 bands of Kumeyaay. The flag shows the tribal logos of each band, displayed in a circle.
