San Diego High School Celebrates New Baseball and Softball Fields With Celebratory Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Tuesday, February 6, 2024
SAN DIEGO – San Diego High School is celebrating its renovated baseball and softball fields with generations of Caver alums who played ball for the region’s oldest high school. Current and former students, staff and district officials, and representatives from the San Diego Padres will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The school is also gathering memorabilia for a time capsule to be stored near the fields at the end of the season. Relatives of former Padre and San Diego High graduate Johnny Ritchey will be on hand to help commemorate the new fields. Ritchey helped to break the color barrier for the Pacific Coast League in 1948 when he was the first Black player drafted for the Padres. Ritchey’s image is memorialized in a campus mural.
