BACKGROUND:

A music-magnet school located in the Oak Park neighborhood of San Diego, Oak Park Elementary offers instruction in band, orchestra, keyboard lab, guitars, and chorus.

In the summer of 2023, construction began on the school’s campus transformation that will replace all portable classrooms with three new buildings and bring campus-wide renovations.

The new buildings include a music facility west of the synthetic turf field and kindergarten and general education classroom facilities east of the field. Two new play structures and a large shade canopy will be installed in the upper-grade play area and a new shade shelter will be provided in the UTK/kindergarten play area.

Campus-wide improvements include a new parking lot with a dedicated student pick-up and drop-off area, exterior paint enhancements, and renovations to all remaining classrooms. To improve security, perimeter fencing and existing student services offices will be modified to create a secure, monitored single point of entry.

Funding for this project is made available through San Diego Unified’s Capital Bond Improvement program.

On February 27, 2024, the San Diego Unified Board of Education passed a resolution to recognize March as California Arts Education Month, which includes music, dance, visual arts, and media arts. Read the full resolution here
