TWO FREE EARLY LEARNING OPTIONS BEING OFFERED FOR 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR

State Preschool and School Readiness Programs Available for Students as Young as 3-Years-Old

SAN DIEGO (JUNE 2, 2025) – San Diego Unified School District is now enrolling 3-year-olds through June 16 for preschool classes at 18 elementary schools for the 2025-26 school year. San Diego Unified is offering two free, separate options for the littlest learners.

There are a total of 1,271 seats available for the part-day (3-hour) program. Attendance is required five days a week. Parents may enroll their child in a morning or afternoon session.

The benefits of early learning have been widely documented, and the younger a child starts, the greater the rates of success.

“Young children are capable of so much. All they need is the opportunity, encouragement and structure to do so,” said Dr. Fabi Bagula, San Diego Unified Superintendent (Interim). “Preschool is where the partnership between home and school intersects.”

Additionally, a list of school sites and a map can be found here.

California State Preschool Enrollment Details

  • The priority window for the California State Preschool Program (CSPP) opened today, June 2 and runs through June 15, and will then reopen again on July 15.
  • CSPP is for students who will be 3-years-old as of December 1.
  • 863 CSPP seats are available throughout 18 elementary schools.
  • Families must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for State Preschool. See income ceiling guideline here.
  • Families will be informed of their enrollment status by mid July.
  • Click here to begin the CSPP application

School Readiness Program Details

Non-income eligible families may apply to enroll their child in the School Readiness program available at 12 school sites to include 408 students. It, too, offers either a morning or afternoon session. However, unlike CSPP, School Readiness is four days a week, with the non-instructional day being the school’s modified day.

Beginning July 15 and continuing through July 22, parents interested in School Readiness will need to fill out a Google form instead of the CSPP application. On July 15, the School Readiness Google form will be found here. Priority is given to families who live within the School Readiness resident boundary. Enrollment will take place at the school site beginning on Monday, July 28.

“Early learning is about introductions - to school, to academics, to socialization and to exploration,” said Santos Gonzalez, San Diego Unified Director of Early Learning. “Interaction and engagement are core elements woven into all lessons to ensure a welcoming environment for every child, where their growth and development are supported and nurtured.”
