KOWBA NAMED INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT OF SAN DIEGO UNIFIED
The following is the statement from Shelia Jackson, President, San Diego
Unified School District Board of Education, regarding the appointment of
Bill Kowba as Interim Superintendent.
Dear San Diego Unified Employees,
Yesterday I notified you that Superintendent Grier had accepted the
appointment as the new superintendent of the Houston Independent School
District and that the Board of Education had received and accepted his
resignation letter, effective October 20. Dr. Grier will use his accrued
leave time to make Friday, September 18, his last day at work.
On behalf of the Board of Education, we want to wish Dr. Grier every success
in his new position and thank him once again for his service to San Diego
Unified School District.
During the last two weeks, the Board of Education has had several meetings
to discuss how we will ensure a smooth transition with Dr. Grier¹s
departure.
I want to assure all of our employees, the school community and the public
that the board is confident in the current district management team and that
we are pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Kowba as interim
superintendent. Mr. Kowba has been a key part of the district¹s senior
management team during the last four years and we are fortunate that he has
accepted the position of interim superintendent.
Mr. Kowba is an experienced leader with the skills needed to lead our
organization at this difficult time. Bill served as our interim
superintendent during the last transition when Superintendent Carl Cohn
resigned. He has played key roles in the district as our chief financial
officer and as chief logistics officer. His detailed understanding of all
aspects of our district operations and our schools make him uniquely
qualified to lead our district operations.
The board will continue to meet in the next few weeks to determine our
longer range plan to identify a permanent superintendent. We do not plan to
rush to fill the superintendent position. We believe we should consider our
needs carefully and will seek staff and community input on what our
priorities should be for the next superintendent of the district.
Sincerely,
Shelia Jackson
