means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

FEBRUARY

1 -- Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy Sixth Annual Lunar New Year
Celebration, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Barnard Elementary School, 2445 Fogg St.
(92109). Join the students and staff at Barnard Asian Pacific Language
Academy in its new Pacific Beach location to celebrate the Lunar New Year,
with cultural contributions from China, Korea and Japan. Students will be
performing the traditional lion dance, martial arts demonstrations,
classical Chinese musical performances, and performances by Barnard's

* 1 -- CalSOAP Cash for College/FAFSA Workshop, 9 a.m., Kearny High
School, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). California Sen. Marty Block is
scheduled to visit from 9:30-10:30. College-bound students are invited to
this free workshop to learn about how to get money for college and the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Information on the Dream
Act will also be available and participants can win a $1,000 scholarship.

1 -- Pt. Loma High Junior Cheer Camp, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pt. Loma High
School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). A half-day camp similar to summer
football camps where participants will learn a performance, do arts and
crafts, have snack and get a camp t-shirt. Participants will then perform
at the Friday, Feb. 7 basketball game with the Pt. Loma High Varsity
Cheerleaders. Cost: $40; is a fundraiser for the Pt. Loma High

1 -- Middle School Girls' Day Out at Scripps Ranch High School, 9 a.m. to
noon, p.m., Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena St. (92131).
Wangenheim and Marshall Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls are
invited to come to Scripps Ranch High School for a morning of fun
engineering activities led by high school students in the Scripps Ranch
High Society of Women Engineers Club. Students will participate in hands
on activities that focus on the different engineering courses that are
offered at the school. Parents will hear from San Diego State University
Project Lead the Way Program and the professional chapter of San Diego

2 -- Hungry Dog Dash, 8 a.m., Roosevelt Road and Cushing Road, Liberty
Station. The fourth-annual event raises funds for Point Loma area schools.

3-7 -- National School Counselors Week

3 -- Superintendent's Appreciation Dinner, 5 p.m., Handlery Hotel, 950
Hotel Circle (92108). This brings educators from the San Diego and
Imperial counties together to network and thank their superintendents for
contributions to the field of education. Sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa and
the Association of School Administrators Region 18. Contact: Dr. Jeanne

3 -- Pershing Middle School 50th Anniversary Celebration, student
assemblies at 8 a.m., 9:45, 11:15 a.m., Pershing Middle School, 8204 San
Carlos Dr. (92119). Pershing opened on February 3, 1964. We have planned a
wonderful assembly for each of the grade levels, complete with photos of
the school being built, former Principals, lots of photos, and of course,
a giant birthday cake. Two of the first students to attend Pershing will

6 -- Teen Iron Chef, 3:30-6 p.m., SDG&E Energy Innovation Center, 4760
Clairemont Mesa Blvd. (92117). Culinary arts and management students from
Hoover, Madison, Morse, San Diego and Scripps Ranch high schools battle
each other by preparing a three-course meal with a secret ingredient. The
competition is based on the Iron Chef America Series on the Food Network.
Staggered start and plating times will be announced for each school.

6 -- University City High School Tours, 12:30 p.m., University City High
School, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). Parents and guardians of students
eligible to attend University City High School are welcome to join in this
tour of the school's excellent facilities, programs, sports and
activities. Eligible students include those living inside the school's
boundary areas or those who can attend through the CHOICE or VEEP

7 -- Kiwanis Club of San Diego Ninth Annual Celebration of San Diego
Unified School Counselors, 4 p.m., MCRD Bay View Restaurant, Neville Road
at Little Drive, MCRD (92140). Annual dinner brings together principals
and staff members as the Kiwanis Club of San Diego salutes the
contributions of school counselors to the students of the San Diego

7 -- Dana Middle School Sweetheart "Father/Daughter" Dance, 6:30 p.m.,
Dana Middle School, Dana Middle School, 1775 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106).
Fathers, male guardians, male relatives/friends are invited to participate

9 -- Friends of SCPA Annual Golf Tournament, 2 p.m., Sail Ho Golf Club,
Point Loma. Proceeds benefit the San Diego School of Creative and
Performing Arts. 9-hole course including buffet from 2-6 p.m. for $60 per
person. Don't golf? Well, come for just the buffet at 4 p.m. for $20 per
person. Can't attend? Consider sponsoring a hole for $150! Great raffle

15 -- 57th Annual Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance, 10:30
a.m., Balboa Park, Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado
(92101). This inspiring patriotic service is a tribute to our flag, those
who are serving our nation, and those who sacrificed their lives in
defense of our continued freedom. The San Diego Chapter of the Military
Order of World Wars organizes this annual event with JROTC color guards,
civic organizations, veteran¹s groups, US Marine Corps Band, military

Imperial Avenue. Sponsored by CalSOAP, the event is for parents and
students to learn about post-high school options, including attending UC
San Diego. Alumni and leaders from UC San Diego and the San Diego Unified
School District will be on hand to discuss college life, financial aid and
other issues. San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy
Marten and Dr. Pradeep K. Khosla, Chancellor of UC San Diego, are

3 -- Read Across America Day, various campuses. Celebrities across the
nation mark the anniversary of the birthday of San Diegan Theodor Geisel,

8 -- Auditions for the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, 8
a.m., San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr.
(92113). Learn about the audition process for high school students. SCPA
is celebrating its 36th year as a public arts magnet high school, and
features five majors and 11 programs of study in the arts, plus an
outstanding academic curriculum. Students in grades 9-12 must audition to

22 -- JROTC Cadet Ball, 5 p.m., Town & Country Resort, Atlas Ballroom, 500
Hotel Circle North (92118). JROTC Cadets and dignitaries from the San
Diego Unified School District will participate in the annual Cadet Ball to
honor military traditions, proper etiquette, customs and courtesies. This
social event develops cadet citizenship and social skills in a formal

* 26 -- Patrick Henry High Performing Arts Center groundbreaking, 3:30
p.m., Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Drive (92120). The
school's long-awaited auditorium and other improvements begin construction
with this ceremony. Portions of the project are being funded by

APRIL

12 -- Fast Times 5K, 7 a.m., De Anza Cove, Mission Bay. Five-kilometer run
benefits schools in the Clairemont neighborhood, including Clairemont and
Madison high schools. Sponsored by the Clairemont Hills Kiwanis and
