JANUARY
6 -- Schools on traditional calendar and district offices reopen.
17 -- Supt. Marten Speaking at 29th Annual YMCA of San Diego County Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast, 7 a.m., Town &
Country Resort, Atlas Ballroom, 500 Hotel Circle North (92108). Supt.
Marten is keynote speaker at the breakfast, which honors the life and work
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Contact: YMCA of San Diego County, (619)

20 -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. All schools and offices closed.
21 -- Year-round calendar schools reopen.
* 21 -- Dana Middle School Parent/Student Book Club, 6:30 p.m., Dana
Middle School, 1775 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). Parents/guardians, students
and staff come together in the Dana Library to discuss and explore books.

22 -- Common Core Math Meeting, 6 p.m., Pt. Loma Nazarene University
Liberty Station Conference Center, 2600 Laning Rd. (92106). Parents can
learn about the changes in how math is taught and new expectation for
student learning for students in kindergarten through grade 8. Presented
by Sherry Lawson, Mathematics Program Manager, San Diego Unified School
District, and Mindy Shacklett, Mathematics Coordinator, San Diego County

this free workshop to learn about how to get money for college and the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Information on the Dream
Act will also be available and participants can win a $1,000 scholarship.

27 -- Local Control Funding Formula Presentation, 4:30 p.m., University
City High School, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). Leadership from the San Diego
Unified School District will be visiting Cluster Committee and other
parent meetings over the next several months to discuss California's new
school budget plan, called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).

30 -- University City High School Tours, 8 a.m., University City High
School, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). Parents and guardians of students
eligible to attend University City High School are welcome to join in this
tour of the school's excellent facilities, programs, sports and
activities. Eligible students include those living inside the school's
boundary areas or those who can attend through the CHOICE or VEEP

prospective families.
FEBRUARY
* 1 -- CalSOAP Cash for College/FAFSA Workshop, 9 a.m., Kearny High
School, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). College-bound students are invited to
this free workshop to learn about how to get money for college and the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Information on the Dream
Act will also be available and participants can win a $1,000 scholarship.

* 1 -- Pt. Loma High Junior Cheer Camp, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pt. Loma High
School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). A half-day camp similar to summer
football camps where participants will learn a performance, do arts and
crafts, have snack and get a camp t-shirt. Participants will then perform
at the Friday, Feb. 7 basketball game with the Pt. Loma High Varsity
Cheerleaders. Cost: $40; is a fundraiser for the Pt. Loma High

6 -- University City High School Tours, 12:30 p.m., University City High
