SD UNIFIED, SD COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARDS HOLD JOINT MEETING
SAN DIEGO ‹ Governing boards of the two largest education systems in San
Diego county will hold a special joint board meeting at 5 p.m. tomorrow,
Tuesday, March 18, as part of an ongoing effort at better coordinating
approaches to issues vital for both the San Diego Community College
District (SDCCD) and San Diego Unified School District.
This will be the third joint meeting of the two boards. The session is set
to start at 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Theatre at San Diego Continuing
Education¹s Educational Cultural Complex, 4343 Ocean View Blvd., in San
Diego¹s Mountain View community.
The joint meeting builds upon joint sessions that took place in 2011 and
2013, representing an opportunity for the two organizations to evaluate
progress and make additional plans to ensure that students are
academically prepared for both higher education and the workforce. The
public and community leaders are invited to attend; this is an open public
meeting for both boards.
Previous meetings have included discussion on aligning academic calendars
between the two districts,coordinating curriculum, concurrent enrollment,
and expanding the early/middle college high school model in which high
school students are provided with extensive preparation for college and
can take several courses for college credit. Mesa College is home to the
San Diego Unified¹s successful MET School; San Diego City College hosts
the San Diego Early/Middle College High School.
Among the many items to be discussed at the March 18 meeting are a K-14
Accountability Framework for Student Success, aligning mathematics and
English curriculum with Common Core standards, establishing a connection
between specific K-12 areas of study and SDCCD college majors, early
childhood education legislation, and Assembly Bill 86, which provides
grants to community colleges and secondary school districts in developing
regional plans to better serve the educational needs of adults.

The San Diego Unified School District serves more than 130,000 students in
pre-school through grade 12 and is the second largest district in
California. The student population is extremely diverse, representing more
than 15 ethnic groups and more than 60 languages and dialects. San Diego
Unified has 117 traditional elementary schools, 9 K-8 schools, 25
traditional middle schools, 24 high schools, 49 charter schools, and 14
atypical/alternative schools.
The San Diego Community College District serves approximately 130,000
students annually through three two-year colleges and seven Continuing
Education campuses. The three colleges, San Diego City College, San Diego
Mesa College, and San Diego Miramar College, offer associate degrees and
certificates in occupational programs that prepare students for
entry-level jobs, and arts and sciences programs that transfer to
four-year colleges and universities. Continuing Education's Educational
Cultural Complex also offers classes leading to associate degrees and
certificates.
