SERVING WHOLE GRAINS TO KIDS ‹ BRING IN THE CHFS
Chefs Visit and Kids Create Recipe Contest Focus on Whole Grains
WHAT: World renown chefs work with elementary and high school students to
create great meals with whole grains.

March 13
9:15-9:55, Jerabek Elementary School, 10050 Avenida Magnifica (92131), 40
min. Approx. 100 third grade students.
10:30-11:15, Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena St. (92131). High
school culinary class, 45 min. Approx. 30 high school students.
11:47-12:17, Scripps High School Lunch/Quad Event. Food Cart on quad with
two healthy pizza variations for final prep and tasting: BBQ Chicken Pizza
and Farmer¹s Market Pizza
March 14
7:00-9:00 Scripps Ranch High School Culinary Classroom, 60 Food Service
managers. Naming, merchandising, sampling and food demo
DETAILS: Mark Ainsworth, Culinary Institute of America Professor and Chef,
and Adam Brumberg, Deputy Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, will
be demonstrating innovative ways to prepare, serve and market food
containing whole grains to students at Scripps Ranch High School and
Jerabek Elementary School.
Part of the Michelle Obama-inspired Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
involved increasing the amount of whole grains in school meals. This is
sometimes a hard sell to kids who have grown up eating refined grain
products like hamburger buns, white bread and white rice.
It is not difficult to transition to whole grains, the challenge is
serving whole grains that children will eat and enjoy, a challenge being
taken on in schools across the nation. Chef Ainsworth and Adam Brumberg
will encourage innovative recipes and marketing. They will also promote
San Diego Unified¹s Kids Create Recipe Contest which will run during
March and ask student Grades K-12 to come up with delicious and healthy
recipes using either whole grain brown rice or whole grain tortillas.
The goal of these events is to provide education and hands-on experience
to students around whole grains, showing how easy it is to make them a
delicious part of their diet and how fun it is to create great recipes.
