MEDIA ADVISORY -- News Conference with Federal, State, Local Officials Show Stimulus Funds Clean Up Buses

Media Advisory from the San Diego Unified School District, July 21, 2009

STIMULUS GRANTS HELP TO NEARLY COMPLETE CLEANUP OF DIESEL SCHOOL BUSES

WHAT: Clean Diesel Bus Grant News Conference

WHEN: 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009

WHERE: San Diego Unified Transportation Center, 4710 Cardin St. (92111).

WHAT: State and federal officials will be on hand to talk about San Diego Unified's fleet of clean diesel buses, and grants to increase their number and how it helps make neighborhoods cleaner. They'll also be presenting funds, from the federal stimulus, that have been used to clean up buses. A "hankie test" will show the clean emissions from the new technology. Students who are in the district's automotive technology program will also be on hand to talk about their career options after receiving training in diesel engine operations.

BACKGROUND: Starting with the first bus retrofit to clean particulates in 1999, San Diego Unified is now fewer than 10 buses away from having all equipment installed on its 500+ bus fleet, making it the cleanest in the nation. Both the latest buses to be cleaned up and the first from 1999 will be on display.

SPEAKERS: Representatives from USEPA, Cal EPA, Air Pollution Control District and San Diego Unified will be on hand. Students who have graduated from and are currently in San Diego Unified's automotive technology classes will also be available to talk about their futures in the field of diesel technology. SDUSD Board President Shelia Jackson and Superintendent Terry Grier will be on hand.

VISUALS: School buses, the newest clean buses and the 1999, first clean bus in the nation. "Hankie test" -- we'll fire up the bus with the latest technology to show how few particulates are discharged. Lots of bright, yellow school buses.
