* Governance Subcommittee of the Proposition S Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee, 4 p.m., Physical Plant Operations (PPO) Center, PPO Annex Room 1, 4860 Ruffner Road, San Diego, The Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee was established to oversee the expenditure of funds from the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, approved by the voters on November 4, 2008. 14 -- Giant Puppet Parade, 9:30 a.m., Monroe Clark Middle School, 4388 Thorn St. (92105). San Diego Guild of Puppetry lead artist, Felix Diaz's whistle will blow, and the annual parade will begin in the streets around the City Heights school. Students from Monroe Clark and many other schools will participate. * 22 -- Clean Diesel Bus Grant News Conference, 10 a.m., San Diego Unified Transportation Center, 4710 Cardin St. (92111). State and federal officials will be on hand to talk about San Diego Unified's fleet of clean diesel buses, and grants to increase their number. Students who are in the district's automotive technology program will also be on hand to talk about their career options after receiving training in diesel engine operations. * 27 -- Summer Fun Café Visit from Supt. Jack O'Connell and Mayor Jerry Sanders, noon, Linda Vista Recreation Center, 7064 Levant Street (92113). San Diego's free summer lunch program for kids age 18 and under get a visit from San Diego's Mayor Jerry Sanders and state Supt. of Schools Jack O'Connell, along with San Diego Supt. Terry Grier. The adults will be there to salute the kids' lunch program and enjoy the adult barbecue, which is being held that day at Linda Vista. Contact: Jack Brandais, San Diego Unified, (619) 725-5570. * 31 -- Hire-A-Youth Salute, 8:30-10 a.m., USS Midway, 910 N. Harbor Drive (92101). More than 500 high school students and their employers are expected in this star-spangled salute to San Diego Unified's Hire-A-Youth students for summer '09. The federally funded program through the San Diego Workforce Partnership provided summer jobs in business, industry and government agencies for disadvantaged students. While at the Midway, students will hear from adults who had similar childhoods and have become a success in life, as well as thanks from their employers. 3-14 -- Summer Intensive, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), 2425 Dusk Drive (92139). Two-week program for advancing high school students interested developing their chosen arts discipline; taught by SCPA faculty and Master Artists from San Diego and Los Angeles.
