MEDIA ADVISORY -- Chargers Salute Attendance at Madison High

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, Nov. 9, 2009

San Diego Charger Players Jeromey Clary and Steve Gregory to Recognize Madison High School 9th Graders with Perfect Attendance

What: GAME On! Attendance Awards Assembly

When: 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Where: Madison High School, 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117)

Background: Madison is one of 16 high schools participating in the GAME On! (Good Attendance Means Everything) Attendance Initiative for 9th graders. Charger Offensive Tackle #66 Jeromey Clary, Offensive Lineman #66 and Safety Steve Gregory #28 will join Madison principal Richard Nash in recognizing 67 ninth graders with perfect attendance thus far this school year. Students will receive award certificates and pins for this first grading period.

Students are being recognized for their school attendance as an important step on the road to graduation and becoming productive members of the community. Research shows that a student's success in the ninth grade is directly linked to the likelihood the student will graduate high school by 12th grade.

Five district schools piloted the GAME On! Attendance Initiative last year and raised their ninth grade attendance by more than one percent. Attendance is tracked on a regular basis with students receiving awards at specific intervals. Incentives are distributed at the progress report grading period, quarterly, semester and year-end basis culminating with a drawing for a lap top computer at each school. Periodic awards include first-in-line passes, local attraction tickets, DVD players and Padre tickets, to name a few. Last year more than $125,000 in incentives were donated by community partners.

Jeromey Clary, Clary's Crew, Steve Gregory, SG Squad and Athletes for Education are partnering with Madison High School to support GAME On! and the ninth grade leadership development program 10-to-Succeed.
