Annual event that kicks off the school year and energizes students and the

* 24 -- Superintendent Introduces New Leadership Team News Conference, 10
a.m., Kearny High School, Kearny High School, 7651 Wellington St. (92111).
News conference introducing San Diego Unified's new management structure,
team and the Community-Based School Reform Model for student achievement.

* 24 -- UAAMAC Reception for District Senior Staff, 6 p.m., Malcolm X
Library, 5148 Market St. (92114). The United African American Ministerial
Action Council welcomes Supt. Kowba and the new management team at San Diego

6 -- Labor Day, all schools and offices closed.

7 -- First Day of School. Supt. Kowba is scheduled to be at a PrimeTime
Extended Day program at 6 a.m., location TBA. By 7 a.m., he is scheduled to
arrive at Hoover High School, where a brand new classroom building is

9 -- Hoover High 80th Anniversary Celebration, 5 p.m., Hall of Champions,
2131 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park (92101). Connect with Hoover alumni and
friends and support today's students while celebrating a historic

Tuesday: Powwow Workshop Soaring Eagles, 6 p.m. Ballard Parent Center, 2375
Congress Ave. (92110). Enjoy free potluck supper and practice for Soaring
Eagles student dance troupe, and pitch in to help the children learn
history, heritage and performance lessons. Part of Parent Outreach's
