* 5 -- McKinley Elementary SoNo Holiday Fest, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thorn
Street between 32nd and Bancroft. (92104). South and North Park come
together for great chili in hand-spun ceramic bowls, holiday gifts and
crafts, live music, kids¹ activities, a beer garden, etc. Local restaurants
compete in the chili cook-off. Benefiting McKinley Elementary¹s Music and

7 -- Board of Education News Conference and Special Meeting, 4 p.m., Eugene
Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103). 4 p.m. news conference
with new and continuing Board of Education members to discuss directions for
district; swearing-in of new Board members at 4:30, reception for new Board
members at 5 p.m., election of new Board officers at 5:30 p.m. Contact: Jack

7 -- Board of Education Meeting, 5 p.m., Eugene Brucker Education Center,

* 8 -- Madison High School Automotive Facility Grand Opening, 10:30 a.m.
(note change of time), Madison High School, 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117). Grand
opening of the new automotive training facility, built with funds from San
Diego Unified's Prop. S and California's Prop. 1D. Contact: Cynthia

9-17 -- SCPA Presents "Scrooge, The Musical, 7 p.m. Dec. 9-11, 15-17 and 2
p.m. Dec. 11, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Grand
Theater, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). Starring our very own teacher and a former
SCPA teacher of the year, Bill Doyle, as Scrooge, 92 students are working on
this production including 50 actors, 26 musicians, and 16 crew members. Mark

* 10 -- Marines Fitness Challenge at Wangenheim Middle School, all day,
Wangenheim Middle School, 9230 Gold Coast Drive (92126). MCAS Miramar
Marines will be holding a "fitness challenge" with students most of the
school day at the Mira Mesa middle school. They'll also have lunch with the

11 -- SCPA Fall Visual Arts Exhibition Reception, prior to the 2 and 7 p.m.
performances of Scrooge, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts
Grand Theater, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). The exhibition is open one hour
earlier than the Scrooge show times and during intermission. The Friends of
SCPA, the school's foundation, will host a special holiday treat complete
with cookies, hot cocoa, and carolers. Exhibition runs Dec. 9-17. Tickets

11 -- SCPA Open House and Information Session, 8:45 a.m., San Diego School
of Creative and Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Drive. (92139). Featuring student
art, theatrical and band performances, this event is for interested students
and families presenting information about what SCPA magnet school has to
offer and the admission process. Event features exhibit of current student
art in the Little Theater. The first 25 attendants win free tickets to that
day's 2 p.m. showing of student presentation, "Scrooge, The Musical"; next
25 attendants win free tickets to the 7 p.m. performance. Media Contact:

13 -- San Diego High School Culinary Arts Facility Grand Opening, 10:30

* 14 -- Recruiting Realities, 7 p.m., Pt. Loma High School, 2235 Chattsworth
Blvd. (92106). Sponsored by the Pt. Loma High School Athletic Department,
speaker Jack Renkins will talk about college recruiting of high school
athletes. He will talk about the process behind the college evaluation

14 -- Board of Education Meeting, 5 p.m., Eugene Brucker Education Center,

* 18 -- Clean Wave Barbecue, 2-5 p.m., behind Ocean Beach Lifeguard Tower 2.
Fundraiser for the Clean Wave and César Chávez Club, with catering by
Hodad's, plus music and a raffle. Funds go to help Pt. Loma High students
attend an upcoming environmental youth leadership conference and other

13 -- Construction Tech Academy Facility Grand Opening, 10:30 a.m., Kearny
High Educational Complex,7651 Wellington St. (92111). Grand opening of the
new facility, built with funds from San Diego Unified's Prop. S and

* 13 -- California Highway Patrol Smart Start Class, 6:30 p.m., Clairemont
High School, 4150 Ute Dr. (92117). The CHP's start smart program is a driver
safety education class which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers
between the age of 15 - 19 and their parents and/or guardians. Contact:

22 -- School Choice Enrollment Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Recital Hall, Balboa
Park. Parents can to obtain information on the various programs offered
within our District. Schools from across the district will participate in

* 31 -- La Jolla High Fundraiser "Taste of La Jolla," 6-8:30 p.m., in
restaurants around La Jolla. 14th annual event sponsored by La Jolla High
School Foundation with all proceeds benefitting La Jolla High School

* 2 -- Pt. Loma Cluster Schools Committee, 6-8 p.m., Barnes Tennis Center,

with parents and community members in the Pt. Loma High School area,
including middle and elementary schools that feed into Pt. Loma High.

14 -- Ladies of Science in the City, 11 a.m., Serra High School, 5156 Santo
Rd. (92124). UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and 30 members of the Ladies of
Science program will visit with students and perform a pickle experiment
conducted by UCSD chemistry professor James Whitesell (the chancellor's

19-26 -- San Diego Science Festival, on SDUSD campuses and in various
locations around San Diego. More than 75,000 students, parents, scientists,
educators, and other community members are anticipated to take part in this
year's activities, with over 30,000 expected on Expo Day, a
free-to-the-community event. Contact: Mary Jo Ball, San Diego Science

Tuesday: Powwow Workshop Soaring Eagles, 6 p.m. Ballard Parent Center, 2375
Congress Ave. (92110). Enjoy free potluck supper and practice for Soaring
Eagles student dance troupe, and pitch in to help the children learn
history, heritage and performance lessons. Part of Parent Outreach's
