Free parent class. Workshop participants will examine the meanings and goals of traditional and modern Black Discipline strategies. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the range of choices available for disciplining children in ways that promote positive self-esteem, harmony in the home, school and community, and stronger parent-child relationships. Whitman Elementary School’s blacktop is the setting for an evening of star gazing through the San Diego Astronomy Club's telescopes. FEBRUARY
2 -- Transforming Education -- Education Re-Energized, 5:30 p.m., USS Midway Museum, 910 North Harbor Drive (92101). Best-selling author and leadership consultant Steve Farber will share the perspectives of his book, The Radical Leap Re-Energized, and will lead a discussion of educators who’ve successfully implemented his “Leap” tenets of Love, Energy, Audacity and Proof and Extreme Leadership. In addition, you’ll have the rare opportunity to meet representatives from many of the region’s most generous corporate and community-sponsored education initiatives. 3 -- Clairemont High Community Tri Mathlon, 6-8 p.m., Marston Middle School, 3799 Clairemont Dr. Tri Mathlon is a math competition for mathletes of all abilities where kids compete by grade-level. The contest features three worksheets involving problems that use number sense, not special formulas or calculators. Students from throughout the Clairemont High cluster (middle and elementary schools that feed to Clairemont High School) will compete.
