NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego Unified, School Police Agree on Revised Contract

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Feb. 10, 2011

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED, SCHOOL POLICE AGREE ON REVISED CONTRACT FOR 2012-13
SCHOOL YEAR

SAN DIEGO An agreement in principle has been reached between the San
Diego Unified School District and San Diego Schools Police Officers
Association to amend the Memorandum of Understanding between the district
and the Association for the 2012-13 school year. A Tentative Agreement
will be presented to the Board of Education and the POA membership for
ratification next week.

The agreement continues furloughs the officers have taken in the 2010-11
and 2011-12 school years and keeps current salary levels in place, among
other changes.

The Association represents sworn officers in the San Diego Unified School
District Police Department. It is the first bargaining unit to step
forward, enter into negotiations and reach an agreement with the district
on contract revisions for 2012-13.

Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President, said he hopes this is
just the first employee group to help with the district's fiscal situation.

"School police have taken the first step with us toward a new era of
collaboration with our employee partners," he said. "We are all in this
together, with our students, and the future of our community is at stake."

Full details of the agreement will be posted on the district's website at
www.sandi.net/budget.

"This is an important step toward handling the cuts imposed on us by the
State of California," said Superintendent Bill Kowba. "We salute our
police officers for their dedication to the students and sacrifice that
they and their families are making in this time of need."

San Diego Unified continues to ask all of its bargaining units for
assistance in closing a potential $122 million budget reduction for the
2012-13 school year.

"We value the need to maintain a safe environment so our students can
continue to excel," said Jesus Montana, President of the Police Officers
Association. "We understand that in this budget crisis, we all need to
tighten our belts.

"Our officers will continue to make sacrifices for our students' needs."
There are a variety of organizations that represent employees at San Diego
Unified, including groups that represent teachers, office workers, bus
drivers and administrators.
