MEDIA ADVISORY -- Board President, Superintendent, To Ask Unions To Help Reduce Layoffs

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, Feb. 29, 2012

BOARD PRESIDENT, SUPERINTENDENT TO ASK UNIONS TO HELP REDUCE LAYOFFS

WHAT: News conference where Dr. John Lee Evans, San Diego Unified School
District Board of Education President, and Bill Kowba, Superintendent,
will ask district unions to come to the negotiating table to help save
1,600 jobs.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 1, 2012, Eugene Brucker Education Center,
4100 Normal St. (92101)

DETAILS: Dr. Evans and Mr. Kowba will discuss the Board's request for $50
million in concessions from SDUSD employee groups (only the San Diego
Unified School Police Association has already agreed to this). The "reduce
layoffs" plan would maintain small class size, saves academic programs and
critical student services. If the unions do not agree, on March 15, 1,600
teachers, librarians, counselors and other certificated staff members will
receive notices that their contracts may not be renewed for the 2012-13
school year.

QUOTE: "Layoff notices don't have to happen but we can't wait to
negotiate. We must do this now." Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education
President.

CONTACT: Bernie Rhinerson, Chief District Relations Officer, (619)
725-5567.
