NEWS RELEASE -- Media Calendar from the San Diego Unified School District,
November 15, 2013

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

NOVEMBER

Through Dec. 18 -- Junior ROTC Holiday Food Drive, various high schools.
JROTC students of the San Diego Unified School District conduct a Holiday
Season food drive to help those in need. Students, teachers, families and
faculty members also support the donation effort. Those wishing to donate
to this cause can deliver canned or dried food to your local JROTC High
School Program. Donated canned and dried goods go to various local
charities, churches and food banks to be distributed to families just

* 16 -- Handmade in San Diego Craft Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sessions
Elementary School, 2150 Beryl St. (92109). More than 75 artists and
crafters are expected to display items, with proceeds going to Kate
Sessions Elementary School. Contact: sessionsfundraising@gmail.com. Open
to the public.

* 16 -- Watershed Avengers, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hamilton Elementary School,
2807 Fairmount Ave. (92105). District partners Ocean Discovery Institute
are inviting students and families from throughout the district to learn
about San Diego's watershed area. Close-toed shoes required. Contact:

* 18 -- Smart Cyber Choices Presentation, 9:20 a.m., Pacific Beach Middle
School, 4676 Ingraham St. (92109) The San Diego Internet Crimes Against
Children Task Force and the San Diego Police Foundation are providing
tools to help kids and parents make smart cyber choices. Students, staff

18 -- Serra High School Cluster Meeting, 6 p.m., Miller Elementary School,
4343 Shields St. (92124). Parents, students and community members are
invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at the
high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Serra
cluster are Serra High School, Farb and De Portola middle schools, and
Hancock, Kumeyaay, Miller, Tierrasanta and Vista Grande elementary

Scripps Ranch cluster are Scripps Ranch High School, Marshall Middle

20 -- Paranormal Theatre, 7 p.m., Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena
St. (92123). Paranormal Theatre will utilize a cast and crew of 30
students in a diverse showcase of performance arts pieces. Proceeds go to
Scripps Ranch High School theater department and the San Diego Unified
School District Visual and Performing Arts Department. Contact: Patrick

21 -- National Parent Involvement Day, The San Diego Unified School
District and the San Diego Unified Council of PTAs invite everyone to
celebrate National Parent Involvement Day. It provides a yearly
opportunity for schools to welcome, honor, and highlight the powerful
contributions parents and caregivers provide at school and home to support

21 ­ Garfield High School Thanksgiving on the Prado, noon, The Prado
Restaurant, 1549 El Prado (92101). Garfield High School Culinary Arts and
Hospitality, Tourism & Recreation students, along with the chefs from The
Prado restaurant will serve a gourmet Thanksgiving feast to guests. This
is a fundraiser sponsored by the Garfield High School Foundation. Proceeds
will benefit the students of Garfield High School. Tickets are $40 in

21 -- Hoover High School/College Avenue Compact Candidate Banquet, 5:45
p.m., Hoover High School Cafeteria, 4474 El Cajon Blvd. (92115). This
event honors the families of students from the class of 2015, currently
juniors, who are on-track for admission to San Diego State University with
an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, are meeting college
preparatory requirements and have earned the appropriate number of high
school credits. Students will be recognized at this event and awarded

DECEMBER

2 -- Pt. Loma Cluster Schools Board meeting, 6:30 p.m., Correia Middle

are invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at
the high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Pt.
Loma cluster are: Barnard, Cabrillo, Dewey, Loma Portal, Ocean Beach,
Silver Gate and Sunset View elementary schools; Correia and Dana middle

3 -- Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman Community Dialogue, 6-8 p.m., Eugene

will offer the opportunity for students to interact in a facilitated
conversation with organizations that have partnered with San Diego
Unified, including the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the City of San
Diego Human Relations Commission, Assembly Member Dr. Shirley Weber, and

* 14 -- We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution high school
competition, Grossmont College, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon.
Students' study of the Constitution culminates in a simulated
congressional hearing, demonstrating understanding of their course of
study on the U.S. Constitution in front of judges who evaluate their
knowledge. Sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education. Contact:
