NEWS RELEASE -- Media Calendar from the San Diego Unified School District,
November 22, 2013

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check
out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

* Indicates new items added since last week.

NOVEMBER

Through Dec. 18 -- Junior ROTC Holiday Food Drive, various high schools.
JROTC students of the San Diego Unified School District conduct a Holiday
Season food drive to help those in need. Students, teachers, families and
faculty members also support the donation effort. Those wishing to donate
to this cause can deliver canned or dried food to your local JROTC High
School Program. Donated canned and dried goods go to various local
charities, churches and food banks to be distributed to families just
before the holidays. Contact: David Guzman, JROTC Program Manager,

25 -- Thanksgiving Break. Schools closed and offices closed to public Nov.
25-29. Communications staff will be available to media Nov. 25-27.
District offices closed Nov. 28-29.

DECEMBER

2 -- Pt. Loma Cluster Schools Board meeting, 6:30 p.m., Correia Middle
School, 4302 Valeta St. (92107). Parents, students and community members
are invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at
the high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Pt.
Loma cluster are: Barnard, Cabrillo, Dewey, Loma Portal, Ocean Beach,
Silver Gate and Sunset View elementary schools; Correia and Dana middle

2 -- Crawford High Cluster Meeting, 5 p.m., Mann Middle School, 4345 54th
St. (92115). Parents, students and community members are invited to attend
this meeting, which discusses educational issues at the high school and
its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Crawford cluster are:
Clay, Euclid, Fay, Ibarra, Marshall, Oak Park and Rolando Park elementary
schools; Carver K-8; Mann Middle School; and Crawford High School.

3 -- Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman Community Dialogue, 6-8 p.m., Eugene
Brucker Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St. (92103). This event
will offer the opportunity for students to interact in a facilitated
conversation with organizations that have partnered with San Diego
Unified, including the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the City of San
Diego Human Relations Commission, Assembly Member Dr. Shirley Weber, and

* 4 -- Local Control Funding Formula Presentation (in Spanish), 9 a.m.,
Sherman Elementary School, 301 22nd St. (92102), District staff will be
discussing the new California education Local Control Funding Formula
(LCFF), which will allow local districts more discretion over spending,
and the additional funds which will come from last year's passage of Prop.

* 5 -- Local Control Funding Formula Presentations. Two presentations are
scheduled: 6 p.m., Barnard Elementary School, 2445 Fogg St. (92109), part
of the Mission Bay High Cluster Committee meeting; 7 p.m., Ballard Parent
Center, 2375 Congress St. (92113), part of the District English Learner
Advisory Committee meeting. District staff will be discussing the new
California education Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), which will
allow local districts more discretion over spending, and the additional
funds that will come from the passage of Prop. 30 in 2012. Media contact:

Elementary School, 2655 Casey St. (92139). District staff will be
discussing the new California education Local Control Funding Formula
(LCFF), which will allow local districts more discretion over spending and
the additional funds that will come from the passage of Prop. 30 in 2012.

10, 12 -- Hour of Code, various schools. Student activity surrounding
computer programming and problem solving. It's a one-hour introduction to
computer science, designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can
learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, and an innovator. High schools
and middle schools around the district will have students follow the same
tutorial to write computer code as part of national Computer Science
Education Week. High Schools - December 10; Middle Schools - December 12.
Full list of schools and classes participating available. Various business
members from the community will be helping in specific classrooms.

* 11 -- Pt. Loma High Master Plan Update Meeting, 6 p.m., Pt. Loma High
School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). The long-range site master plan for
Point Loma High School is being updated. The site master plan provides a
road map for the near- and long-term growth and redevelopment of the
school. It will also assist in planning capital facilities bond projects

* 12 -- Local Control Funding Formula Presentation, 6 p.m., Kearny High
School, 7651 Wellington St. (92115). District staff will be discussing the
new California education Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), which will
allow local districts more discretion over spending and the additional
funds that will come from the passage of Prop. 30 in 2012. Part of the

* 14 -- Pacific Beach Middle School Beach Cleanup, 9 a.m., Tourmaline
Surfing Park parking lot, foot of Tourmaline Street (92037). Students from
nearby Pacific Beach Middle School will be hitting the beach to clean
things up in this service project. The students are required to do a
variety of public service projects during the school year. Contact: Ernest

public area.

* 14 -- Whitman Elementary Fashion Mom Contest, 2 p.m., Whitman Elementary
School, 4050 Appleton St. (92117). Fundraiser for upgrades to school's
playground will have Whitman PTA moms modeling outfits. Audience members
can vote for their favorites. Contact: Pam Thompson, Principal, (858)

14 -- We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution high school
competition, Grossmont College, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon.
Students' study of the Constitution culminates in a simulated
congressional hearing, demonstrating understanding of their course of
study on the U.S. Constitution in front of judges who evaluate their
knowledge. Sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education. Contact:
