Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

DECEMBER

Through Dec. 18 -- Junior ROTC Holiday Food Drive, various high schools.
JROTC students of the San Diego Unified School District conduct a Holiday
Season food drive to help those in need. Students, teachers, families and
faculty members also support the donation effort. Those wishing to donate
to this cause can deliver canned or dried food to your local JROTC High
School Program. Donated canned and dried goods go to various local
charities, churches and food banks to be distributed to families just

* 7 -- Correia Music at Barons Marketplace, noon-2 p.m., 4001 W. Point
Loma Blvd., (92110). Barons Marketplace is holding an event to support
Correia Instrumental Music this Saturday December 7th from 12-2pm. Hear
great music from our Correia music students both past and present, sample
food, enter the raffle for some great prizes. Performances given by the
Pt. Loma Flute Choir, Correia String Quartet: Strings by the Sea, Correia
Jazz Ensemble, and Correia Alum, Allison Bell, Jaden Rosenthal, Ian Ross &
Easton Espinosa of the very popular band Fate by Friday. Contact: Barons

* 8 -- La Jolla Christmas Parade, 2 p.m., Girard Avenue and Prospect
Street, La Jolla (92037). University City High School "Centurion Sound"
Marching Band and Color Guard, the Standley Middle School Marching Band,
Doyle Elementary Girl Scout Brownie Troop 3876 and vehicles from La Jolla
High are scheduled to participate in the annual event. Contact:

9 -- Local Control Funding Formula Presentation, 6 p.m., Zamorano
Elementary School, 2655 Casey St. (92139). District staff will be
discussing the new California education Local Control Funding Formula
(LCFF), which will allow local districts more discretion over spending and
the additional funds that will come from the passage of Prop. 30 in 2012.
Part of the Morse High School cluster meeting. Media contact: Jack

* 10 -- Standley Middle School Winter Concert I, 7 p.m., Standley Middle
School, 6298 Radcliffe Dr. (92122). First of three concerts; this one
features the Intermediate Band 7-8 and Jazz Band. Contact: Heidi Eastcott,

10, 12 -- Hour of Code, various schools. Student activity surrounding
computer programming and problem solving. It's a one-hour introduction to
computer science, designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can
learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, and an innovator. High schools
and middle schools around the district will have students follow the same
tutorial to write computer code as part of national Computer Science
Education Week. High School, Dec. 10; Middle Schools, Dec. 12. Full list

* 11 -- Correia Middle School Holiday Concert, 6:30 p.m., Correia Middle
School, 4302 Valeta St. (92107). Join us for a holiday world tour as our
instrumental ensembles explore how the many cultures that make up our
world celebrate the season. Features bands, orchestra, flute choir and

11 -- Pt. Loma High Master Plan Update Meeting, 6 p.m., Pt. Loma High
School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). The long-range site master plan for
Point Loma High School is being updated. The site master plan provides a
road map for the near- and long-term growth and redevelopment of the
school. It will also assist in planning capital facilities bond projects

* 12 -- Standley Middle School Winter Concert III, 7 p.m., Standley Middle
School, 6298 Radcliffe Dr. (92122). Last of three concerts; this one

* 12-20 -- San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts presents "Into
The Woods" by Stephen Sondheim, Kittleson Little Theater, San Diego School
of Creative and Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). The set is
designed to feature the illustrations of the Visual and Media Arts
Students in the 2-Dimensional Design Program. Stunning portraits of the
characters from the show are on display as the actors on stage move
through the musical story. Performances are at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 12; 2 p.m.
and 7 p.m. Dec. 14; 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19; 7 p.m. Dec. 20; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Dr. (92122). It's the 12th annual holiday tradition in the University City
neighborhood and the Standley Middle School Marching Band will be there to

* 14 -- San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Open House for
Prospective Students and Families, San Diego School of Creative and
Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). Come see a presentation on San
Diego SCPA. Learn about the audition process for high school students and
the open enrollment process for middle school. SCPA is celebrating its
36th year as a public arts magnet high school, featuring five majors and
11 programs of study in the arts, plus an outstanding academic curriculum.

14 -- Pacific Beach Middle School Beach Cleanup, 9 a.m., Tourmaline
Surfing Park parking lot, foot of Tourmaline Street (92037). Students from
nearby Pacific Beach Middle School will be hitting the beach to clean
things up in this service project. The students are required to do a
variety of public service projects during the school year. Contact: Ernest

14 -- Whitman Elementary Fashion Mom Contest, 2 p.m., Whitman Elementary
School, 4050 Appleton St. (92117). Fundraiser for upgrades to school's
playground will have Whitman PTA moms modeling outfits. Audience members

14 -- We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution high school
competition, Grossmont College, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon.
Students' study of the Constitution culminates in a simulated
congressional hearing, demonstrating understanding of their course of
study on the U.S. Constitution in front of judges who evaluate their
knowledge. Sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education. Contact:

wonderful performance ensembles, including the award winning
Preservationists, Jazz Ensemble and new course ensembles this year, Choir
and Concert Band. Come witness these talented young musicians perform
everything from holiday classics to jazz standards. Admission: $5.
