NEWS RELEASE -- Media Calendar from the San Diego Unified School District,
December 13, 2013

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check
out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

DECEMBER

Through Dec. 18 -- Junior ROTC Holiday Food Drive, various high schools.
JROTC students of the San Diego Unified School District conduct a Holiday
Season food drive to help those in need. Students, teachers, families and
faculty members also support the donation effort. Those wishing to donate
to this cause can deliver canned or dried food to your local JROTC High
School Program. Donated canned and dried goods go to various local
charities, churches and food banks to be distributed to families just

12-20 -- San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts presents "Into
The Woods" by Stephen Sondheim, Kittleson Little Theater, San Diego School
of Creative and Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). The set is
designed to feature the illustrations of the Visual and Media Arts
Students in the 2-Dimensional Design Program. Stunning portraits of the
characters from the show are on display as the actors on stage move
through the musical story. Performances are at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 12; 2 p.m.
and 7 p.m. Dec. 14; 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19; 7 p.m. Dec. 20; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Dec. 21. Tickets: $8; students, seniors, military $5. Media contact:

14 -- San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Open House for
Prospective Students and Families, San Diego School of Creative and
Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr. (92139). Come see a presentation on San
Diego SCPA. Learn about the audition process for high school students and
the open enrollment process for middle school. SCPA is celebrating its
36th year as a public arts magnet high school, featuring five majors and
11 programs of study in the arts, plus an outstanding academic curriculum.

14 -- Pacific Beach Middle School Beach Cleanup, 9 a.m., Tourmaline
Surfing Park parking lot, foot of Tourmaline Street (92037). Students from
nearby Pacific Beach Middle School will be hitting the beach to clean
things up in this service project. The students are required to do a
variety of public service projects during the school year. Contact: Ernest

14 -- Whitman Elementary Fashion Mom Contest, 2 p.m., Whitman Elementary
School, 4050 Appleton St. (92117). Fundraiser for upgrades to school's
playground will have Whitman PTA moms modeling outfits. Audience members
can vote for their favorites. Contact: Pam Thompson, Principal, (858)

14 -- We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution high school
competition, Grossmont College, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon.
Students' study of the Constitution culminates in a simulated
congressional hearing, demonstrating understanding of their course of
study on the U.S. Constitution in front of judges who evaluate their
knowledge. Sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education. Contact:

18 -- Correia Middle School Holiday Concert, 6:30 p.m., Correia Middle
School, 4302 Valeta St. (92107). Join us for a holiday world tour as our
instrumental ensembles explore how the many cultures that make up our
world celebrate the season. Features guitar ensemble. Contact: Jonathan

18 -- We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution middle school

19 -- Mission Bay High Music Program, "Snow and Tell," 7 p.m., Mission Bay
High School, 2475 Grand Ave. (92109). This concert will feature our
wonderful performance ensembles, including the award winning
Preservationists, Jazz Ensemble and new course ensembles this year, Choir
and Concert Band. Come witness these talented young musicians perform
everything from holiday classics to jazz standards. Admission: $5.

* 19 -- Holmes Elementary Winter Holiday Program, 6-8 p.m., Holmes
Elementary School, 4902 Mt. Ararat Dr. (92111). Performances galore from
kids in grades kindergarten through six. School expects an overflow crowd

to the public.

19 -- Dana Middle School Instrumental Music Concert, 6:30 p.m., Dana
Middle School, 1775 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). Come here the sounds of the
talented Dana students. All bands: beginning, intermediate, advanced and
jazz band, as well as beginning and advanced orchestras will be

public.

23-Jan. 3 -- Winter Break, all schools and offices closed.

JANUARY

* 22 -- Common Core Math Meeting, 6 p.m., Pt. Loma Nazarene University
Liberty Station Conference Center, 2600 Laning Rd. (92106). Parents can
learn about the changes in how math is taught and new expectation for
student learning for students in kindergarten through grade 8. Media
