JANUARY
*13 -- Information Fair, 6 to 7 p.m., Creative, Performing and Media Arts (CPMA) Middle School, 5050 Conrad Ave. (92117). Parents and students who have a passion for the visual and performing arts are invited to attend the information night being held in the new Performing Arts Center at the North Clairemont middle school. *15 -- Renaming Florence Elementary Public Meeting, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Florence Elementary School, 3914 First Avenue (92103). San Diego Unified has received a request from the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society to rename Florence Elementary to Christine Kehoe Elementary School. This is the second community meeting to inform the public of the request and gather community input on this request as the district implements its process in the naming of schools. 19 -- All traditional schools and offices closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
20 -- All schools (traditional calendar and year-round calendar) and work sites are back in session.
30 -- 38th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March, 9:30 – 11 a.m., Knox Middle School, 1098 S. 49th Street (92113). This annual event helps children gain a better understanding of Dr. King’s vision and emphasis on the principles he advocated for all humankind. Students from other schools as well as special guests, parents, and staff participate in the short march around the neighborhood near the campus. Not open to the public. FEBRUARY
*4 -- An Evening with Joy Cowley, 4-6 p.m., Standley Middle School auditorium, 6298 Radcliffe Drive (92122). Renowned children’s book author, Joy Cowley, will give a special presentation to district TK – 2 grade teachers. Her presentation will be followed by a meet and greet. Not open to the public.
