SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT RESPONSE TO GOVERNOR BROWN'S PROPOSED 2015-16 STATE BUDGET
"As part of the work our district and our Board began last fall with the California Legislature and the Governor's administration to advance adequacy in state education funding in California, we asked for the acceleration of LCFF funding. We also asked for the repayment of the $4 billion in mandate claims owed to school districts statewide. We are pleased to see evidence in this budget that our advocacy efforts are being heard, " said Marten. "We also asked for flexibility in administering one-time grants, and we are grateful that we were heard here as well. The Governor's proposal reinforces local flexibility and decision-making in the use of these one-time funds which can be used to support implementation of the state standards and other priorities identified by individual districts who receive these funds."
"Our finance team is already hard at work looking at the proposed funding to see how it will help us fund our 2015-2016 priorities to the fullest extent possible," she added. "These priorities are based on a year's worth of collective feedback from stakeholders and partners, and include continued reduction of class sizes, targeted counseling support, and improved equity for schools, strengthening early learning, continued high school transformation, improvements to services for English Learners and students with disabilities, and more localized parent and community engagement strategies, based on strategies outlined in the district's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).<http://www.sandi.net/lcap> Our ultimate financial goal is to have a balanced budget with no deficit, and one that continues to support achieving our Vision 2020<http://www.sandi.net/vision2020> for a quality school in every neighborhood."
The district's First Interim Financial Report<http://www.boarddocs.com/ca/sandi/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=9QARG66DD354> was approved by the Board in December. A budget update, incorporating the Governor's proposal, is scheduled to be provided to the Board on January 20. Site-based budget workbooks are scheduled to be released to the schools in late January.
