Mission Bay Buccaneers Celebrate New Stadium, New Softball Field and Upgraded Baseball Field

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District is dedicating new athletic facilities to Mission Bay High School tomorrow. More than 1,000 students donning their black and gold will join alumni, parents and community members to celebrating the school’s new stadium, softball field, upgraded baseball field and other amenities.
WHEN: Thursday, April 16, 1:30-2:15 p.m.
Following the ceremony:
· 3 -6 p.m. -- Open House with displays featuring Mission Bay academics and programs in the school gym.
· 3 p.m. -- Varsity track meet starts
· 3:30 p.m. -- Varsity baseball game starts
WHERE: Mission Bay High School Stadium, 2475 Grand Ave., S.D. 92109 -- Media parking will be available on site. Take Lee Ave. south to parking lot west of stadium. (A site map is available.)
VISUALS: Presentation of Colors by Navy Color Guard for Naval Hospital San Diego; students performing National Anthem, a special event honoring military personnel, student speakers, senior athletes recognized, ceremonial ribbon cutting, approximately 1,500 students in black and gold, alumni, staff and community members in the new stadium, new softball field, and upgrades to baseball field. The Associated Student Body will be selling “Buc gear” and alumni will be selling bricks, both to raise money for school projects. Food trucks will there as well.
SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Student speakers, Ernest Remillard, principal of Mission Bay High School; Board Trustee Mike McQuary; and Lee Dulgeroff, chief Facilities Planning & Construction officer. The athletic director and alumni president will be available for interviews as well. (Spanish interviews available.)
PROJECT INFO: This project included rebuilding the school stadium and softball field and upgrading baseball field.
Stadium: The existing stadium field and track were replaced with a new synthetic turf field and all-weather track. Other upgrades include new:
• Accessible bleachers--1,600-seating capacity on the home side and 800-seating capacity on the visitors’ side
• Press box with elevator for accessibility
• Athletic facilities building (approx. 3,648 square feet) that includes an accessible ticket booth, restrooms and
• concession stand for home and visitors, as well as storage area for athletic equipment.
• Stadium lighting and sound system
• Scoreboard and goal posts
• Athletic equipment storage facilities (approx. 2,160 square feet)
• Home and visitor entrance gates
• Improvements to drainage and irrigation systems.
Softball Field: The existing softball field was relocated and re-constructed with new synthetic turf, accessible dugouts, bleachers, concession stand, announcer’s booth, backstop, fencing and scoreboard.
Baseball Field: New accessible bleachers were constructed, as well as an announcer’s booth and concession stand.
Construction started in December 2013 and finished in March 2015. The project was funded by Proposition Z and State Schools Facilities Funds, and it represents an investment of nearly $11 million into Mission Bay High School and the Mission Bay and Pacific Beach communities.
