27 -- Hoover High School Alumni Baseball Day, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Boulevard (92115). With a great baseball tradition dating back to the late Hall of Famer Ted Williams, plus more than a dozen major leaguers, alumni will meet to support today's student-stars. * 2 -- National Read Across America Day, with events at schools throughout the district. Becky Pringle, Vice President of the National Education Association (NEA), is scheduled to read at the following schools: Balboa Elementary, 1844 S. 40th St. (92103), 7:45 a.m.; Carson Elementary, 6905 Kramer St. (92111), 9 a.m.. * 3 -- Balboa Elementary Design Task Force, 6 p.m., Balboa Elementary School, 1844 S 40th Street (92113). The Design Task Force meeting is for phase one of the Whole Site Modernization Project at Balboa Elementary School. You will join other key stakeholders and the architect to discuss the general design of the school, and how it can best serve the students and the community for years to come. * 3 -- Emerson-Bandini Elementary Design Task Force, 6 p.m., Bandini Elementary School, 3550 Logan Avenue (92113). The Design Task Force meeting is for the Whole Site Modernization Project at Emerson-Bandini Elementary School. The site master plan provides a road map for the near- and long-term growth and redevelopment of your school. It will also assist in planning the capital facilities bond projects for your school. 7 -- Grad Nation Workshop, 5:30 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Avenue (92113). Kickoff of San Diego Unified's participation in Grad Nation, a national effort to raise the high-school graduation rate in the US to 90 percent (it is currently 80 percent). The speaker is Aída Walqui, English learner scholar and director of the teacher professional development program at WestEd, anonpartisan, nonprofit research, development, and service agency working with education and other communities throughout the United States and abroad. Schools from the Clairemont and Madison high school clusters will have a group, club, or classroom focusing on sustainability on exhibit.
