USDA & Northgate Gonzalez Market Partner to End Hunger Among Kids & Teens

About 22 million children and teens receive free and reduced price meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National School Lunch Program.  However, only an estimated 3.8 million (1 in 6) participate in the USDA Summer Meals Programs. To help reach low-income children who fall victim to the nutrition gap that leaves millions without nutritious food to eat during the summer, USDA is partnering with Northgate Gonzalez Market. Through adverts in weekly circulars and in-store announcements, Northgate Gonzalez Market will play a critical role in ensuring more families in need learn about the summer meals programs, which are free to children and teens 18 and under.

In 2015, nearly 12 million meals were served to children and teens in San Diego County through USDA-funded summer meals programs.  According to FeedingAmerica.org, over 20 percent of children living in San Diego County go hungry—66 percent of them are from families living below the poverty line.
