San Diego Unified School District Staff and Students Participate in San Diego PRIDE Parade




WHEN: Saturday, July 13, 2019, 9-11 a.m.


WHERE: Contingent 69B. Students and staff will be prepping in the purple area, on the north side of the intersection at Lincoln Avenue and Normal Street.


VISUALS: San Diego Unified students and staff preparing to march in the PRIDE parade by decorating a 30-foot yellow school bus. Staff members who marched in the first contingent 25 years ago, will march again, while holding the first-ever district PRIDE banner.


DETAILS: The annual event is the fourth-largest in the United States, attracting more than 200,000 participants each year. This year marks the district's 25th year participating in the parade. The San Diego PRIDE parade is one of the many ways the district demonstrates its commitment to diversity and inclusion. the district's theme is "Unified in Pride."



San Diego Unified is proud to support lesbian, gay, bisexual/pansexual, transgender, questioning/queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) students and families. Here are some of the ways the second-largest school district in California is "Unified in Pride."

In addition to participating in the PRIDE parade, San Diego Unified celebrated Pride Month with several special events, and resolutions, including the inaugural flag-raising ceremony of the Rainbow Pride and Trans Pride flags in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.



July 9: Board of Education voted on two resolutions: Resolution in support of Assembly Bill 493 and Resolution in support of Recognizing June 2020 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month for All Schools and Students in San Diego Unified.



July 10: Superintendent Marten testified in Sacramento in support of Assembly Bill 493 requiring, among other things, that each school operated by a school district or county office of education and each charter school provide online training at least once every two years to teachers of students in grades 7 to 12, inclusive, and to all other certificated employees at that school, on school site.



July 13: San Diego LGBT Pride Parade - "Unified in Pride" Contingent. The annual San Diego Pride Parade is the largest single-day civic event in the region and is among the largest Prides in the United States, attracting more than 200,000 people. San Diego Unified's presence in the parade serves as an opportunity to make visible its commitment to promoting safe and affirming schools for students, families, and educators that focuses on intersectional diversity, acceptance, and unconditional support for our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators.
