BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified School District will kick off the 2023-24 school year. After uncertain weather conditions brought on by Hurricane Hilary delayed the first day of school by one day, schools are welcoming some 98,000 students to the district.

This new school year promises to be one of growth and accomplishment. San Diego Unified remains committed to the values of equity and belonging, to create conditions for all students to thrive. Students have access to mental health and wellness supports, free and nutritious meals, and extended learning opportunities. A rigorous education is offered to all students–from four-year-olds enrolled in free Universal Transitional Kindergarten through high school.
