Thank you for your interest in attending San Diego Unified’s celebration and news conference for the first day of school on Monday, August 21, 2023. Due to weather concerns caused by Hurricane Hilary, the pre-press conference media opportunity originally scheduled for 6 a.m.-7 a.m. has been canceled. Please find a revised media advisory below, and attached.

The district will continue to monitor the weather, and will make any necessary changes to the program.

SPEAKERS: Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson, Board President Sabrina Bazzo, Principal Tracey Makings, Hoover High School ASB President Reyna Flores, district officials, students

Hoover cheer and mariachi performances

News conference

One-on-one interviews; opportunity to feature topics including girls CIF flag football, College Career and Technical Education sports medicine program, Community Schools; Students arriving on campus

Bell rings to begin classes

BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified will kick off the new school year with a commitment to the values of equity and belonging, to create conditions for all students to thrive. Students have access to mental health and wellness supports, free and nutritious meals, and extended learning opportunities. A rigorous education is offered to all students–from four-year-olds enrolled in free Universal Transitional Kindergarten through high school.

NOTE: The district will continue to monitor weather conditions related to Hurricane Hilary, and will make any changes to the program that may be necessary
