San Diego Unified to Raise Latinx/e Flag in Honor of Latinx/e Heritage Month

WHAT: In celebration of Latinx/e Heritage Month in September, students from the San Unified School District will raise the official Latinx/e flag at the district's central office. Students, district staff, educators, and members of the Board of Education will attend and support this event. The ceremony represents San Diego Unified's commitment to recognizing students of all backgrounds and teaching about the significance of understanding different cultures.

BACKGROUND: For the first time in district history, San Diego Unified will raise the Latinx/e flag above district headquarters from September 15 to October 15 in honor of Latinx/e Heritage Month. Students will raise the Latinx/e flag to signify the district's commitment to acknowledging all backgrounds and cultures by teaching about their contributions. The flag-raising ceremony<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jt2aGwSh_dHY6hmGEEmtoyZnS_KIUgHH/view> will be entirely student-led, featuring students from across the district.



On Tuesday, September 12, the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution<https://go.boarddocs.com/ca/sandi/Board.nsf/files/CVGSL373233A/$file/Resolution%20LatinXE%20Heritage%20Month%2C%209-12-2023.pdf> to recognize Latinx/e Heritage Month. The resolution and flag-raising coincides with the beginning of the heritage month, a period of time intrinsically linked to the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations.
