Logan Memorial Educational Campus Partners with Veterinary Industry Leader in DEI to Inspire and Support Future Veterinarians
September 21, 2023
SAN DIEGO - Logan Memorial Educational Campus (LMEC) is hosting the nationally-recognized veterinary diversity, equity, and inclusion program BLENDvet to educate and empower youth on the vast opportunities in veterinary medicine. Through immersive hands-on experience, students at LMEC will be introduced to the veterinary field as a career path. The event is sponsored by the American Association of Animal Hospitals (AAHA), which is currently hosting a veterinarian conference in San Diego.
WHAT: Diversity-focused event engaging elementary and middle school students in a hands-on experience introducing them to the veterinary field as a career path
WHEN: Friday, September 22, 10:30 a.m.-noon
WHERE: Logan Memorial Educational Campus - 2875 Ocean View Blvd, San Diego, CA 92113
VISUALS: Students in medical gowns practicing suturing on a life-like animal model; students learning how to perform a physical exam with actual dogs; students learning how to perform animal CPR and bandage wounds for pets
BACKGROUND: The veterinary field is one of the least racially and ethnically diverse fields. According to BLENDvet founder and CEO Dr. Niccole Bruno, only 6 percent of veterinarians are Latinx, 4.5 percent are Asian, and less than 3 percent are Black. The BLENDvet group is working with veterinary industry leaders nationwide to inspire more young people from underrepresented communities to enter the veterinary career path. San Diego Unified School District and LMEC believe exposing students at a young age to career paths that they may not have previously been aware of or believed are not available to them because of underrepresentation is an important part of the educational system.

About AAHA
The American Animal Hospital Association was founded by leaders of the veterinary profession in 1933. From its inception, AAHA has focused on promoting high-quality standards for the rapidly evolving sector of small-animal private practice through accreditation and other initiatives. These standards were developed to raise the bar of veterinary excellence and have undergone numerous updates throughout the years, always reflecting current industry standards. Today, AAHA is still the only organization to accredit companion animal veterinary hospitals.
