VISUALS: Land acknowledgement statement, Kumeyaay bird singers, powwow dancers, student speakers, flag-raising.
INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: Students, members of Native American tribes, district leaders.
BACKGROUND: November is Native American Heritage Month. In recognition, a land acknowledgement will open the ceremony at district headquarters. The Kumeyaay were the original caretakers of the land where San Diego Unified schools and offices now reside.
The flag raising is just one of many ways the district continues to support Native American students and the larger Kumeyaay community.
The flag itself is inspired by an elder from the Jamul tribe and approved by a committee of leaders of the region’s 12 bands of Kumeyaay. The flag shows the tribal logos of each band, displayed in a circle.
