October

Oct. 30, "Frankenstein," University City High School, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). Students will be performing Rick Averill's stage adaptation of the Mary Shelly Classic. Performance times are 7 p.m. Oct. 28 and Oct 30, and 2:20 p.m. Oct 29. Tickets are $10 for non-students and $8 for students, $7 with an ASB card. 3 -- Star Party, 6 p.m., Walt Whitman Elementary School, 4050 Appleton St. 92117). Volunteers from the San Diego Astronomy Association will be setting up telescopes for everyone to use at the 7th annual event. We will be able to see the Ursa Major (Big Dipper), Jupiter, Uranus, Draco and more. Contact: Wyvona Barrett, (858) 273-2700. Open to the public.

4 -- Fall Festival, Emerson-Bandini Elementary School, 3510 Newton Ave. (92113). There will be games, haunted hall, homemade food, a cakewalk and raffles. All proceeds go to providing field trips or our students. Contact: Mirna Estrada, Principal, (619) 525-7418. Open to the public.
 
4 -- Dia de los Muertos Festival, Longfellow Spanish Immersion School. 5055 July St. (92110) from 5-8 p.m. The traditional celebration of remembrance of departed loved ones is a popular event featuring food, displays of classroom projects and hands-on craft activities. Cost is $5 child and adults are free. 4 -- Star Party, Boone Elementary School 6 -7:30 p.m. East Parking Lot, 7330 Brookhaven Road (92114). In conjunction with San Diego Astronomy Society, Boone will offer an evening of star and planetary gazing through high-powered telescopes. For information (619) 479-3111. Open to the public.

5 -- Principal Coffee, 8-9 a.m., Doyle Elementary School, 3950 Berino Ct. (92122). Parents are welcome to come and chat with principal Kimberly Moore. Contact: Principal Kimberly Moore, (858) 455-6230. Open to the public.

7 -- 17th Annual Mira Mesa Invitational Band Review and Tournament. Mira Mesa High School, 10510 Reagan Road., (92126).The parade begins 12:30 p.m., the show begins 3:30 p.m. in the stadium. Open to the public.

7 -- Craft Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Curie Elementary School, 4080 Governor Drive (92122). The 31st annual event brings more than 100 crafters selling holiday items, plus carnival games, silent auction baskets, opportunity drawing, bake sale, food booth and cake walk. 7 -- Holiday Arts and Crafts Market, McKinley Elementary School, 3045 Felton St. (North Park).  10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Start your Holiday shopping while supporting local artisans and the school. 9 - Community Meeting Mira Mesa Cluster Schools from 6-8 p.m. in the Mira Mesa High School Media Center. This meeting will be a time to establish the Community Advisory Council as discussed in October. Open to the public.

9 -- GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) District Advisory Committee, 6:30 p.m., Auditorium, Harold J. Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress St. (92110). Contact: (858) 573-5987. Open to the public.

9 -- Audit and Performance Subcommittee of Prop. S Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee, 4:30 p.m., Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal Street (92103). Open to the public.
 
10 -- Challenger Middle School Campus Tour, 9:30-10:15 a.m.,10810 Parkdale Ave. (92126).  Parents interested in enrolling their 6th, 7th or 8th grader in Challenger for the 2010-2011 academic year are encouraged to tour our high-performing school and apply through the Enrollment Options programs. For information contact Tamra Winchell at (858)586-7001, ext. 2219 or twinchell@sandi.net. Open to the public. 

12 - Student Athlete/NCAA Night in the Mira Mesa High School Auditorium from 6-7:30 p.m. Open to all grade levels, this is an informational meeting reviewing graduation requirements, NCAA athletic requirements for community college, four year college and university admittance. Recommended for student athletes considering playing sports in college at any level. Open to the public.
 
12 -- How to Apply Workshop, 5 p.m., Annex 9 Testing Room, Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal Street (92103). Members of San Diego Unified's Human Resources Department will share advice on how to apply for jobs with the district. Contact: (619) 725-8195. Open to the public.

12 - Community Advisory Committee for Special Education, General meeting scheduled for Harold Ballard Parent Center Auditorium, 2375 Congress St. 7 p.m. Open to the public.

14 -- Benjamin Franklin Elementary 80th Anniversary and Reunion Celebration, 1-4 p.m., Franklin Elementary School 4481 Copeland Avenue (92116). All former students, teachers, staff, administrators mad parents are invited to attend. Open rooms, designated reunion areas, program, light refreshments and Maypole Dance. Cost: $10 per person. 17 -- How to Participate in the Project Stabilization Agreement (PSA) Workshop, two sessions: 1 p.m., San Diego Unified Physical Plant Operations Center Training Room A, 4860 Ruffner St. (92111); and 6 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). Starting October 27, 2009, the PSA will affect all Proposition S work valued at $1 million and over. Learn how the PSA will impact bidding and day-to-day operations on school construction. 18 -- District Advisory Council for Compensatory Education, 6:30 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Ave. The District Advisory Council for Compensatory Education (DAC) is a district-level committee made up of parents/guardians, staff and community leaders who consult with the Board of Education and district staff on behalf of Title I compensatory education program participants. 19 -- Pt. Loma High International Trade Summit, 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., Pt. Loma High School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd. (92106). Students in Mary Jean Delcampo's business classes will be representing various countries and businesses throughout the school day. 1-3 Japanese Teachers Visiting San Diego Unified, various campuses. At the request of the National Center for Teacher Development, San Diego Unified will host a group of teachers from Japan, who are visiting the US to gain a greater understanding of our systems. 2 -- Tour of New Madison High Auto Technology Facility with Supt. Jack O'Connell, 10 a.m., Madison High School, 4833 Doliva Drive (92117). Madison's new automotive technology facility is currently under construction, with funding coming from state Prop 1D and San Diego Unified Prop S. Supt. O'Connell will be joined by the auto technology's volunteers and partners, as well as San Diego Community College District staff, in a tour of the new facility.
