STATE SCHOOLS CHIEF VISITS SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL, UNVEILS NEW SCHOOL CULTURE
AND CLIMATE TOOL
WHAT: Visit of Superintendent Jack O'Connell to announce new workbook
designed to improve school culture and climate. It's a tool to help cut the
achievement gap between ethnic groups.
WHEN: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010
WHERE: San Diego High Educational Complex, School of International Studies,
1405 Park Blvd. (92101)
BACKGROUND: The result of last year's California Healthy Kids and California
School Climate Survey have now been put to use by the state Department of
Education, which found a link between factors such as school meals and
campus life, and the achievement gap. Supt. O'Connell will be announcing a
new workbook that give schools tips on how to improve these areas, which it
is hoped will reduce the achievement gap.
SPEAKERS: In addition to O'Connell, principals from the participating San
Diego High schools will be available to give their thoughts on this new
program. In addition, students from the school's nutrition program will be
talking about their experiences with healthy eating and their classmates'
classwork. Students will be available for interviews and photographs.
PARKING: Enter San Diego High from Park Boulevard; there will be reserved
spots for the media.
