WHAT: High School Instrumental Honors Concert

WHEN: 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28

WHERE: Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B St. (92101).

WHAT: First of three annual Instrumental Honor Concerts, presenting the
finest musicians in the San Diego Unified School District. More than 150
students are participating in the four concerts. Schools represented include
Clairemont, Hoover, Patrick Henry, Lincoln, Madison, Mira Mesa, Morse, Point
Loma, School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Scripps Ranch, Serra
and University City high schools. Students are in grades 9-12, ages 13-18.

These all-stars specialize in a specific instrument such as the violin,
clarinet, cello, bass, trombone, and much more. Qualified artists from
grades 4-12 were encouraged by parents and teachers to audition beside
hundreds of others, rehearse together for less than two months and perform
before an audience of almost a thousand people.

Sponsor of the concerts is the San Diego Community Council for Music in
Schools, a group which supports continued music education in public schools.
Since 1990, this group has collected and distributed more than 800 musical
instruments to San Diego school children.

QUOTE: ³Performing groups bring kids together. The band gives students more
self-confidence and the opportunity to express themselves. Attendance has
increased, drop out rates have decreased. The kids need this.² Ann Marie
Haney, Community Council for Music in Schools. No tax money is used for
these concerts.

Contact: Ann Marie Haney, Community Council for Music in Schools, (858)
