BOARD TACKLES BUDGET PRIORITIES AT 5 P.M. MEETING TODAY
WHAT: Board of Education Meeting to discuss 2010-11 school budget.
WHEN: 5 p.m. today, Feb. 9, 2010
WHERE: Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103)
DETAILS -- San Diego Unified's Board of Education will look at staff
recommendations for closing a potential state funding gap that exceeds $80
million in next year's general fund budget.
Recommendations include suspending the Palomar, Old Town and Balboa Park
programs for three years, moving some Special Education and Gifted-Talented
Education (GATE) program functions to schools, consolidating departments and
suspending new textbook purchases. The recommendations are based on the
Board mandate to create a budget based on several priorities.
Staff is currently working on projections given by the office of Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger. Additional projections will be given in March and May,
however the official funding will not be known until the budget is approved
by the state Legislature and signed by the governor.
This is the first of many meetings on the budget, which must be approved by
June 30 and balanced, by state law.
